Caliente Tryout Results Announced

May 10, 2002 - Women's Professional Football League (WPFL)
Arizona Caliente News Release

(May, 6th, 2002 - Phoenix, AZ) After 3 weekends of open tryouts, held at North High School in Phoenix, the Arizona Caliente women's football team made their First Round of cuts. 34 new recruits were invited to join many returning 2001-2002 Inaugural Season Caliente players for what they hope will make even stronger Arizona Caliente team. A full roster is available for viewing at the team website at www.WAFL-Caliente.com.

Offering greater opportunity and adding more depth, this year the Arizona Caliente will be fielding 2 "preseason teams" (Caliente Heat & Caliente Fire). Currently the team consists of 65 women, not counting the returning players who are out of the state/country and those currently sidelined on injured reserve, who will be divided into the 2 teams over the next few weeks.

"We couldn't be more pleased with the amount of talented athletes that we saw at this year's tryouts," said Caliente Owner/General Manager, Jennifer Cada. "Now that we have proven that the Caliente are the "real deal", one of our objectives this year is to raise the awareness that women can and are playing football. We feel being able to give more women in Arizona the opportunity to learn and play the game of football, will help spread the word and build even more excitement."

The Arizona Caliente head into the next few months, with a very busy agenda off the field as well. The Caliente Charities will be hosting youth clinics in conjunction with the Boys & Girls Club, as well as doing volunteer work at the upcoming Grand Canyon State Summer Games. The Caliente will also be announcing its partnership with other women's sports organizations locally and nationally in the upcoming months.

The Caliente Heat and Caliente Fire will compete against each other in an exhibition match hosted by The Caliente Charities at the end of July. The team still expects the addition of more players to be added to the roster over the next few months, some coming off injured reserve as well as those recruited through private tryouts. In August the 2 teams will merge and there will be a final cut down to the active roster of 44 players (plus 10 reserve) for the Fall 2002 Season.
