Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - In search of a win in their final home game of the year, the Victoria Seals squared off against the Calgary Vipers in game three on Sunday afternoon. With the visitors sending ace Dallas Mahan (2-3) to the mound, the Seals countered with Aaron Trolia (1-3) in the series finale.
The Seals were first on the board in the bottom of the opening frame when Wilver Perez picked up a lead-off single, stole second, and made it 1-0 when he also stole home on a Mahan pick-off attempt to first base.
Calgary would respond in the top of the second, though, using a single from Kit Pellow before Colin Moro was hit by a pitch and Caonabo Cosme reached on a fielder's choice to set up an RBI double from Drew Miller that brought in another run on an overthrow to home plate.
The Vipers then stretched their lead to 4-1 in the third inning when a one-out single courtesy of Nelson Castro was followed by a two-run shot from former Seal Sergio Pedroza. Fehlandt Lentini followed that up with a solo home run to kick of the fifth inning and lift the visitors to a four-run advantage.
After Billy Krause drove in Victoria's second run of the day with a double in the fourth, Calgary put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth inning. With the Seals starter ejected before even a pitch, Graham Campbell took over on the mound but gave up back-to-back singles to Kevin Price and Jorge Mejia singled followed by another home run off the bat of Lentini.
Castro then launched the Vipers fifth home run of the afternoon to make it a 9-2 score. Before the frame was out, base hits from both Pellow and Raul Gonzalez loaded the bases before Cosme and Drew Miller plated runs on a fielder's choice and ground out, respectively, and a wild pitch cashed another run to cap off a seven-run sixth for the Vipers.
Calgary extended their lead even further in the top half of the seventh inning when a lead-off walk to Lentini scored with the help of a deep home run to left field from Pellow to stamp a 14-2 lead on the board. With the game shifting to the bottom of the eighth, Brian Rios gave the largest crowd of the year (4,228) something to cheer about with a pinch-hit home to pull the home side back within ten.
Posting another pair of strikeouts in the ninth inning, closer Mac Suzuki stepped in to finish off a big win for the Vipers as Calgary clinches the second-half North Division title with a 14-4 victory.
Calgary starter Dallas Mahan collects his third win on the season though six strong innings, while Aaron Trolia drops to 1-4 for the Seals. Calgary centrefielder Fehlandt Lentini had a dominant night at the plate, posting 4 RBI's, while Kit Pellow also racked up four hits as the Vipers posted a staggering 9 home runs in their final two games at Royal Athletic Park.
