El Paso Buzzards News Release
EL PASO, Texas - The El Paso Buzzards today announced the signing of forward Derek Reynolds for the 2002-2003 season. Reynolds, 27, is a former Central Hockey League Rookie of the Year for the 2000-2001 season when he played for the Huntsville Tornado under Buzzards' head coach Craig Coxe.
"Derek Reynolds will be a fantastic addition to our team," said Buzzards' general manager Robbie Nichols. "Coach Coxe is really filling out the roster with quality, all-around players for the upcoming season."
"What Derek Reynolds brings to my team, for a player who has not played professionally for long," said Coach Coxe, "is good leadership, a lot of skill and though he might not be the biggest guy out there, he has the biggest heart and plays as big as anybody I've ever played against."
Reynolds, a native of North Battleford, Saskatchewan, played college hockey for the University of Nebraska Omaha (NCAA) and accumulated 63 points and 63 penalty minutes in three seasons on the team. After his last season with the Mavericks during the 1999-2000 season, Reynolds, who stands 5'10" and weighs 180 pounds, signed with the Huntsville Channel Cats of the CHL and played five regular season games and five play-off games with the 'Cats. He stayed in Huntsville the following season and racked up 53 points (22-31-53) in 68 games with the Tornado as well as 253 penalty minutes.
Reynolds' signing brings the Buzzards' 2002-2003 roster to seven players. Reynolds joins defensemen Aaron Boh, Rhett Dudley, Jason Tessier and Trevor Folk as well as right-winger Derrell Upton and goaltender Matt Carmichael. Reynolds, Carmichael and Folk all played together for Coach Coxe during the 2000-2001 season in Huntsville.
The El Paso Buzzards play in the professional Central Hockey League. The team finished their season with a 36-24-4 record and made it to the second round of the play-offs for the first time in four years.
