Busy Weekend for Five at Draft

August 27, 2018 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada)
Sudbury Five News Release

(Greater Sudbury, ON) The Sudbury FIVE are pleased with the results of the NBL Canada DRAFT COMBINE hosted over the weekend by the Windsor Express in Windsor, Ontario. Sunday's Two-Round Draft, allowed for some aggressive actions by GM and Head Coach Logan Stutz who traded the first overall selection with the Moncton Magic for a player and the 8th overall pick later in the round. In other moves, Coach Stutz, traded the 2nd round pick for a former teammate of his from the Express.

"We have been quietly making some moves and this weekend allowed us to round out the core of what our team should look like this winter and I am happy with the progress we have made since August 8th (the day he was announced)," said Stutz. "The Combine allowed us to get in the mix with our competitors in the league, establish ourselves and ultimately, add to the announcements this week."

From the weekend, The FIVE come away with 3 solid players on their protected list to add to the inaugural signing announcements this week. To kick off the draft day, Juan Pattillo and their 8th overall pick were acquired in a trade with the Moncton Magic for the 1st overall selection. Juan Pattillo has played in Asia, Europe, and Canada and led the NBL Canada in rebounding 2 seasons ago. Juan is a Las Vegas, Nevada native and has 7 professional seasons to his credit.

As round one continued and the FIVE got up to their turn to select, Stutz selected Canadian Funsho Dimeji with the 8th overall selection. Funsho hails from Toronto and is a very strong and athletic for his 3 / 4 position (Small / Power Forward). This would be his first year pro and he is eager to hit the hard wood this fall.

Coach Stutz's work wasn't finished as he went on to acquire Braylon Rayson from the Windsor Express in exchange for the FIVE's 2nd Round selection in the 11th overall position. Rayson has played 1-year professional basketball with the Express and led the NCAA's Central Michigan with the record of most 3- point shots made in the history of the school. He is a dynamic shooting guard that keeps defense on it's heels and fans looking for more.

The Sudbury FIVE turn their attention this week on the upcoming announcement at Cambrian College Wednesday at 11:05am where they are set to announce the first 2 player signings in franchise history in addition to the new partnership. Sudbury FIVE Basketball tickets are on sale now at www.greatersudbury.ca/tickets and the season schedule is expected to be published in early September.
