Amarillo Bulls News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - First periods have been the tonic that have stirred the Amarillo Bulls drink early on in the season, and that continued on Friday night at American Bank Center.
Two first period goals and strong goaltending from Jason Grande propelled the Bulls past the Corpus Christi IceRays 3-1. The victory extended the Bulls first-place lead to six points over the Topeka Pilots which were beaten in Odessa.
The forward line of Nick Trela, Brendan West and Jason Brancheau came out strong in the first 20 minutes for the Amarillo Bulls and they helped to set up the first goal. West provided the support and worked the puck up to Jason Brancheau who was able to spot Trela with a strong pass. Trela made a great move to push the puck past Sam Best and give the Bulls a 1-0 advantage.
Seven minutes later, after the Bulls killed off a penalty, Nick Trela spotted Logan Jenuwine open, who was off pushing up the ice and able to connect with a low shot past the goaltender's blocker and a 2-0 lead.
The IceRays had the better of the scoring chances in the first period and outshot the Bulls 15-11.
The second period featured some strong goaltending from Sam Best of the IceRays, who denied Jason Brancheau and later Cooper Fensterstock on scoring chances. The IceRays capitalized off a Bulls turnover and got on the board thanks to a goal from Ryan Willett. The Bulls outshot the IceRays 15-11 in the stanza.
The third period featured strong defense by the Bulls which prevented the hometown team from tying the game. In fact, the IceRays were limited to just six third period shots. David Ojamae rounded out the scoring for the Bulls when he scored into an empty net from Brett Abdelnour.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Corpus Christi IceRays 33-26. There were six combined power plays with no goals being scored by either team.
That was just the first game of the weekend series between the two teams. They will go at it again tomorrow (Saturday) night at approximately 7:30 pm at American Bank Center. Tune into the action live on 107.1 Nash Icon, www.amarillobulls.com and on PPV with Hockey TV beginning with the Fit Omni Warm Up Show 20 minutes before the puck is dropped.
