Durham Bulls News Release
(Indianapolis, IN) Chris Richard drove in the tie-breaking run in the eighth inning, as the Bulls snapped a three-game skid with a 3-1 win on Wednesday afternoon over Indianapolis.
Richard's single to right off Jason Davis (0-8) followed a walk to Justin Ruggiano, who was then balked to second. Durham added in insurance run later in the inning on a bases-loaded walk of number nine hitter Craig Albernaz.
Jason Childers (8-3) and Dale Thayer (14 saves) made those runs stand up by retiring the final six Indians hitters in order. Childers had kept the game even at one in the seventh inning, striking out Neil Walker with the bases loaded. Walker had homered (his eighth) one inning earlier off Wade Davis to tie the game at one.
The Bulls (54-43) had taken a 1-0 lead in the third against Tom Gorzelanny when Richard delivered a two-out single to left center. Richard went 3-for-5, while Matt Joyce added two of Durham's seven hits.
Davis, Childers and Thayer combined to four-hit Indianapolis (46-51). Davis battled through a rainy afternoon (the game was delayed for nine minutes in the sixth to improve the field conditions), and struck out nine in 6.2 innings.
Durham, now one game behind Norfolk in the South Division pending Wednesday night's game between the Tides and Gwinnett, will wrap up a stretch of 11 straight road games on Thursday.
Andy Sonnanstine (2-0) comes of the DL to take the mound for Durham. Sonnanstine has been sidelined with mononucleosis. Brad Lincoln starts for the Indians. Coverage on 99.9 the Fan begins at 6:55, with first pitch at 7 p.m.
