Louisville Bats News Release
Louisville, KY -Bulls starting pitcher, Jeff Niemann helped the Durham Bulls make sure the Bats kept the champagne on ice, as the Bulls shutout the Bats 5-0 with 6,600 fans in attendance. With the loss the Bats' magic number holds at one.
The Bats had a very tall order tonight trying to produce any offense off of Niemann (8-5, 3.54). The 6'9" pitcher was impressive all evening, as he recorded the victory keeping the Bats off their game all evening. Niemann pitched a complete game, recording four strikeouts and allowed only four hits en route to the shutout.
The only offense the Bats could muster up the entire game were two leadoff doubles in the second and sixth innings and a leadoff single by Shaun Cumberland in the third. However, Louisville failed to capitalize on either opportunity.
Durham jumped out in front 2-0 in the second inning when Bulls catcher John Jeso ripped a two-run homer over the right-field fence.
The Bulls added on to their lead in the fifth when Fernando Perez hit a two-run single that bounced off of Ramirez's glove to make the score 4-0. With the bases loaded in the eighth, Bats reliever Josh Roenicke walked Elliot Johnson, helping Durham tack on what would be the final run of the game, which put the Bulls up 5-0 for good.
Bats starter Ramon Ramirez (3-5-1, 3.28) picked up the loss as he gave up eights hits, four runs and struck out four in 6.1 innings of work.
With the loss the Bats must await the results in Norfolk or wait to take care of business tomorrow night.
Louisville and Durham will play the third game of the four-games series Thursday night with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Bats lefty Adam Pettyjohn (13-5, 4.73) will go head-to-head with RHP Wade Davis (3-1, 2.19).
