Belleville Bulls News Release

PETERBOROUGH, ON - Looking to even up the season series, the Belleville Bulls came into the Peterborough Memorial Centre with revenge on their mind. Despite a late third period charge by the Petes, the Bulls escaped with a 5-4 win.

Right from puck drop Belleville came out flying, putting a number of quality scoring chances on Peterborough netminder Dylan Wells. Bulls shooters fired 10 shots on goal in the first five minutes of the opening stanza. Just before the seven minute mark, over-ager Brett Gustavsen buried a centering pass from rookie forward Brandon Saigeon to give the Bulls the early 1-0 lead.

Belleville kept pressing, a little over three minutes later Welland, Ontario native Niki Petti potted his 12th of the campaign at 9:58. Jake Marchment picked up the helper on the goal. Shots favoured the Bulls 20-8 after the first frame.

Things got a little chippy in the second stanza. The Bulls enjoyed two power plays in the period thanks to a hooking call on Connor Boland and a cross checking penalty to Cam Lizotte but couldn't capitalize while on the man advantage.

At 12:27 Pete's forward Matt McCartney ran over goaltender Connor Hicks prompting a scrum in front of the Bulls net. McCartney was handed two for goaltender interference while Subban sat two minutes for roughing.

The Petes got on the board at the 14-minute mark. Rookie forward Jonathan Ang beat Hicks to cut the Bulls lead in half. Atrem Vladimirov and Eric Cornel pick up helpers on the play.

The Bulls responded in the dying mintues of the period. Adam Laishram jumped on a loose puck and put home his 6th of the season to regain the two-goal advantage at 18:39. Brett Welychka and Remi Elie were credited with assists. Belleville led 36-21 in shots after 40 minutes.

Looking to battle their way back, the Petes poured it on in the third period. 1997-born defenceman Matt Spencer scored his 3rd of the year just 1:10 into the stanza. Then rookie blue liner Matt Timms tied it up at 4:36.

The Bulls didn't fold, however. In just his third game back from suspension, Jake Marchment put his squad ahead with an unassisted marker just under the 12 minute mark.

At 14:40 Matt Luff was handed a delay of game penalty for flipping the puck over the glass, giving the Petes their first man advantage of the contest. Waterloo, Ontario native Steve Lorentz made Belleville pay as he scored his 8th of the year on the power play and once again tied the game. Two minutes later Marchment banked his second of the game off of Wells to give the Bulls the 5-4 win.

Final shots favoured Belleville 52-34. With the win the Bulls improve to 17-14-1-1. Hicks made 30 saves while Marchment was awarded the games third star.
