Bulls Headed to Robertson Cup

TOPEKA, KS- The Amarillo Bulls are off to the Robertson Cup National Championship Tournament.

Two goals 35 seconds apart powered the Bulls past the Topeka RoadRunners 3-1 in the fifth and deciding of the South Division Final. The Bulls take the best of five series 3-2 and give Amarillo hockey its first division title.

The Bulls will start at the Robertson Cup Tournament next Tuesday in Topeka either playing the early or late game.

Goaltender Nikifor Szczerba was sensational in net stopping 29 of 30 shots and the Bulls defense was terrific in the third period shutting down the RoadRunners offense and their chances.

The Amarillo Bulls power play got off to a great start as Dan Sherer poked the puck home at the side of the net from Zack Smoot and Matt Johnson at 9:15 to make it 1-0. However, three minutes later Topeka on a shot that just trickled across the goal line. Topeka outshot Amarillo 16-6 in the first period.

The second period was all Amarillo as they scored two goals 35 seconds apart to make it 3-1. Matt Johnson put home a shot into the empty net from Dan Sherer and Zack Smoot. It was Smoot who started the play with a great push up the ice and Sherer's shot drew goaltender Rasmus Tirronen to the far side leaving the open net for Johnson.

Cody Freeman extended the Bulls lead when he followed up a rebound from Michael Erickson and Sean Keane.

The Bulls outshot Topeka 13-8 in the second period.

There were a total of 10 power plays with each team getting five opportunities. The Bulls had the lone power play goal.
