Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - For the second time in as many nights, the Durham Bulls and Gwinnett Braves needed extra innings to decide a marathon at the DBAP. After ten innings of scoreless ball, Gwinnett pulled out the late win, scoring three runs in the 11th off of Dane De La Rosa to deal the Bulls their first loss of 2012. Braves starter Eric Cordier and relievers Buddy Carlyle, Dusty Hughes and Adam Russell combined for the eleven inning shutout victory.
Alex Torres was extremely effective in his season opener for the Bulls, striking out seven and allowing only two hits. Durham's single season strikeout king was lifted early though, throwing 94 pitches in just 4 1/3 innings. The Bulls pen kept the clamp down on the Braves offense as Ryan Reid, Marquis Fleming, and Jhonny Nunez allowed only one hit on 5 2/3 combined scoreless innings.
The Bulls looked like they could recapture Opening Night's walk off magic in the 9th, but failed to push a run across the plate after loading the bases with one out. In the top of the 11th inning, right fielder Jordan Parraz singled off of the new pitcher for the Bulls, Dane De La Rosa. The big righty then walked shortstop Drew Sutton and allowed the go-ahead run to advance to third on a wild pitch two batters later. Braves third baseman Joey Terdoslavich delivered the game's big breakthrough, smacking a double to the right centerfield gap, allowing both Parraz and Sutton to score. Catcher Jose Yepez followed with a double off of the Blue Monster to score Terdoslavich and put the Braves up 3-0. De La Rosa would escape the inning by striking out left fielder Cory Harrilchak, but the damage had been done as the Bulls went down quietly in their final at bat.
Despite the loss, Kyle Hudson continued to shine since joining the Bulls only days before the season opener. In the season's first two games, the former two-sport athlete from the University of Illinois is 6-for-8.
The Gwinnett Braves return to the DBAP for game three of the four game series tomorrow night at 5:05pm. RHP Bryan Augenstein will make his Durham Bulls debut against 2011 IL Pitcher and Rookie of the Year Julio Teheran. Once again, Bugs Bunny will make an appearance at the DBAP courtesy of Time Warner Cable. Bulls fans will also be treated to a team autograph session following the game on the field.
