Amarillo Bulls News Release

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Bulls fired 52 shots on goal, but it wasn't enough as the New Mexico Mustangs tallied three times in the third and overtook the Bulls 4-2 on Saturday night in the Bullpen at the Amarillo Civic Center.

It is the fourth win by the Mustangs against the Bulls this season, and second in the Texas Panhandle. The Bulls remained tied for second place in the NAHL's South Division, as the Texas Tornado dropped a 4-2 decision in Wichita Falls.

It was a game that the Bulls deserved a much better fate, controlling much of the play during the first period and again in the third but failing to beat goaltender Marco Wieser.

The game was tied 1-1 entering the third period when the Mustangs took the lead 2-1 just 25 seconds into the stanza. The Bulls pulled even in the final six minutes of regulation time when Zack Smoot followed up a rebound and beat Wieser. Michael Erickson and Matt Johnson earned assists on the goal. However, just over three minutes later the Mustangs tallied what proved to be the game winner on a turnover in the Bulls' zone. The Mustangs added an empty net marker to round out the scoring.

The Amarillo Bulls set what is believed to be a team record for most shots on goal in a period. The Bulls wired 24 first- period shots and were rewarded for their hard work when Cody Freeman scored from Brandon Lubin and Joe Kozlak on the power play at 15:45.

In the second period the Bulls had an extended power play of seven minutes, but couldn't score. The Mustangs came back and tied the game at the 7:41 mark. The last two minutes of the period featured some wide-open action, but no goals as goaltenders Steve Bolton and Marco Wieser were put to the test.

The Amarillo Bulls were 1 for 10 on the power play, while the Mustangs were 0 for 5.

It's back on the road for the Amarillo Bulls on Wednesday night when they visit the Wichita Falls Wildcats at 7 pm. Fans can tune into the action on ESPN1440 and www.amarillobulls.com, beginning with The Bulls Warm Up Show Presented by Wayland Baptist University at 6:45 pm. Denis J. Puska has the play by play action at 7 pm.

The Bulls return home on Friday, Feb. 25 and Saturday, Feb. 26 when they host the Corpus Christi IceRays at 7 pm on both nights. The Friday game is Scout Night and to book your Pack or Troop, please call the Bulls office at 806-242-1122.
