Amarillo Bulls News Release
TOPEKA, KS - Undisciplined hockey hurt the Amarillo Bulls on Friday night at Kansas Expo Center Landon Arena.
The Bulls surrendered four power play goals in the first 40 minutes of play, and dropped a 5-2 decision to the RoadRunners. It was the just the Bulls second regulation loss of the season with the last one dating back almost three months to September at the North American Hockey League Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota.
"This evening's game was a disappointment because everything we talked about prior to the game we did not do or execute," said Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams. "We took foolish penalties against a team that has a good power play, and we also didn't play into our strengths of five-on-five hockey.
"We have to learn that there are no easy games out there and will have to re-group to earn a split on Saturday."
It was a quick start to the opening period by the Amarillo Bulls as they came out with sustained pressure, but were unrewarded for their efforts. The Topeka RoadRunners capitalized on the power play midway through the first period to take a 1-0 advantage. The Bulls tied the game on a RoadRunner turnover as Tyler Deresky skated after a loose puck and pushed it by goaltender McKenzie Sawyer. However, in the dying seconds of the stanza the RoadRunners would add a second goal to take a 2-1 advantage. Shots on goal in the opening period favored Topeka 13-3.
The Bulls out-worked the RoadRunners in the second period, outshooting them 12-4 but failed to get anything past the goaltender. Topeka fired two more goals via the power play including one in the final three seconds of the period.
The third period started the way last Saturday's did when the Bulls pulled off that amazing comeback. Two consecutive power plays and a goal off the stick of Brandon Flood from Gage Christianson and TJ Sherman at 6:33 cut the deficit to two goals. The Bulls couldn't get any closer and surrendered a goal to round out the scoring with less than six minutes remaining in the third period.
The Amarillo Bulls were outshot by the Topeka RoadRunners 28-25. There were 11 total power plays in the contest with Topeka finishing 4 for 6 and Amarillo was 1 for 5.
Boxscore Topeka 5 - Amarillo 2
