AMARILLO, TX - Six goals over the final 40 minutes of play powered the Amarillo Bulls to a 7-3 triumph over the Corpus Christi IceRays on Friday night in the Bull Pen at the Amarillo Civic Center. It was the Bulls 30th win of the season, and it moved them back into second place in the NAHL's South Division.
It was a close game through the first period with the teams tied at 1-1. The Bulls then took command of the final 40 with three quick goals in the second and two more early in the third period.
Bulls defenseman Dan McDougall had a terrific game with four assists, while four other players had multi point efforts. Dan Sherer had a goal and two assists, while Joe Kozlak, Zack Smoot and Matt Johnson each had two points.
The IceRays scored the game's first goal on the power play in the opening period, but less than a minute later the Bulls pulled even when Eric Millisor's back hand shot found the back of the net. Zack Smoot earned an assist on the goal.
After being outshot early on, the Bulls rallied with more pucks on net and had the advantage 13-11.
In the second period, the Bulls tallied three goals five minutes apart to take a 4-1 lead. Matt Johnson got the scoring going from Zack Smoot at 10:57 mark. Just over two minutes later, Joe Kozlak added to the lead when he pushed a puck across the goal line from Cody Freeman. Michael Erickson netted the fourth goal when he deflected home a shot from Dan McDougall. The IceRays closed out the scoring with a goal into an open net after goaltender Nikifor Szcerba and a Corpus Christi hit one another behind the net.
The Bulls began the third period with a power play goal when Dan Sherer connected from Joe Kozlak and Dan McDougall. Seven minutes later, Sean Keane converted a 2 on 1 play from Matt Johnson and McDougall. After the IceRays narrowed the margin to 6-3, TJ Sarcona rounded out the scoring when he scored for Amarillo from Mitch Rogge and McDougall finished with his fourth assist.
