Amarillo Bulls News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Bulls picked up where they left off after the Christmas Break and made New Year's Eve a memorable one for their fans.
Will Harrison scored twice and Jacob Weatherly stopped 43 of 46 shots he faced to power the Bulls past the Wichita Falls Wildcats 6-3. It was the Bulls third win in a row and fifth straight on home ice. The victory pushed the Bulls into sole possession of the sixth and final playoff spot in the South Division and just two points back of fifth.
Other marksmen for the Bulls were Luke Novak, Joseph Leonidas, Nick Le Sage and AJ Duggan.
The Bulls got off to a fast start building a 3-1 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game and needed a second three goal spurt in the third period to put away the stubborn Cats and post their first win over them this season.
It was a terrific opening period for the Amarillo Bulls scoring three times on nine shots. Nick Le Sage got the Bulls rolling when his shot beat David Zevnik to make it 1-0. Addison Runey started the play by keeping the puck in at the blue line and Riley Christensen was able to get a shot on goal where Le Sage followed up the rebound and scored. After the Wildcats tied the game 1-1 on the powerplay, the Bulls sharpshooting continued with two goals in less than 2 minutes. First Will Harrison scored on a great pass from Luke Novak and then AJ Duggan connected from Elijiah Barriga and Mike Damien. The Wildcats had the shot advantage 10-9 in the first period.
The Amarillo Bulls spent much of the second period defending in front of goaltender Jacob Weatherly. The Wildcats put 21 shots on goal but were unable to beat the young Colorado native. On one stretch, the Bulls battled inside their own zone blocking pucks and doing whatever they could to move the puck outside of the blue line. The Bulls managed just six shots in the second.
The visiting Wildcats made the third period interesting when they converted on a chance in front of the net to close the game to 3-2. After that it was all Amarillo with three straight, beginning with Luke Novak who converted a 2 on 0 breakaway with Will Harrison. AJ Duggan started the play by working the put out of his own end along the boards. Just over a minute later, Harrison scored a power play goal when he pushed the puck just across the goal line from Kasper Emanuelsson and Joseph Leonidas. The Bulls were not done yet and scored a sixth goal, this time Leonidas shot the puck upstairs on the goaltender from Addison Runey and Trent Dillinger. The Wildcats rounded out the scoring with a third goal in the final two minutes of play.
The Wichita Falls Wildcats outshot the Amarillo Bulls 46-27 including 13-12 in the third period. The Bulls were 1 for 7 on the power play while the Wildcats were 1 for 3.
