Keystone Ice Miners News Release

CONNELLSVILLE, PA - The Ice Miners won their 6th home game in seven tries and 3rd overall as they prevailed 3-2 in a shootout Wednesday night against Kenai River. With the win, Keystone moved back over the .500 mark (15-14-3) and into sole possession of third place in the North Division with 33 points.

Keystone opened the scoring at 8:11 of the first period when Austin Romzek deposited a rebound from a Vito Aluia shot. Michael Maiden also assisted. It was the lone goal of the first 40 minutes. Spectacular play by Alex Blankenburg kept the score at 1-0.

Just 1:06 into the third period, the Brown Bears tied it up when Ben Campbell found himself alone in front of the net and took a pass from Tanner Schachle and beat Blankenburg. Just over two minutes later, Brendan Jaquay responded with his 3rd goal of the series, and 6th of the year with an unassisted goal, breaking up the right wing and firing a wrister past Kenai goaltender Evan Hauser. Shortly after, Kenai River had a goal disallowed when Blankenburg was interfered with as Austin Chavez's shot flew past him. Despite the waived off goal, the Brown Bears tied it up at 12:01 when Cameron Cook took a pass from Joseph Kaszupski.

After a scoreless overtime, the shootout was filled with goals. The first three Ice Miners shooters (Romzek, Jaquay, and Jacob Coleman) all scored. Nick Klishko and Maurin Bovet scored for Kenai River but Blankenburg stopped Kaszupski in the fifth round to end it. It was Blankenburg's 9th win of the season, and his third shootout win, as he made 30 saves. Hauser made 24 stops in the loss, which was the 10th in 11 games for Kenai River.

After New Year's Day off, the Ice Miners will welcome in the Fairbanks Ice Dogs for a 7:30 PM start on January 2nd and a 4:00 puck drop on the 3rd.
