San Antonio Missions News Release

SAN ANTONIO - It was a back-and-forth battle between the San Antonio Missions and the Frisco RoughRiders for San Antonio's 2022 home opener. The two clubs traded leads throughout most of the game. However, it was Frisco who spoiled the opening night festivities with a 6-4 victory.

Dwayne Matos was the starter for the Missions and he was making his Double-A debut. The debut did not go according to plan for Matos as he failed to make it out of the first inning. The 21-year-old surrendered seven runs on seven hits capped off by a three-run home run off the bat of Sandro Fabian. Gabriel Morales replaced Matos and recorded the final out of the inning.

The Missions offense helped chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the first inning by scoring four runs of their own. Esteury Ruiz began the inning with a walk and Connor Hollis was hit by a pitch. Following a Brandon Dixon strikeout, Yorman Rodriguez drove in a run with an RBI single. Jorge Ona provided the big blast with an opposite field three-run blast to cut the lead to 7-4.

The comeback effort continued for San Antonio as they added in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs in the inning, Korry Howell reached base after getting hit by a pitch. Howell quickly came around after Chris Givin hit a double to left field. The Missions trailed by just two runs.

Morales put together a terrific outing out of the bullpen for the Missions. The hard-throwing left-hander tossed 3.1 scoreless innings while allowing just one base hit. He also struck two batters and walked one.

Ramon Perez made his Missions debut in relief of Morales. With Perez in the game, Frisco added an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning. Kellen Strahm reached on a throwing error from Brandon Dixon. After advancing to second base, Trey Hair drove in Strahm with a double to left field. His hit made it an 8-5 Frisco lead.

The bottom of the sixth inning saw the Missions inch closer to the Frisco lead by adding a sixth run. Howell started off the inning by drawing a walk. Givin advanced him to third base by hitting a single to center field. Howell came around to score after Robert Podorsky laid down a sacrifice bunt. The Missions trailed 8-6.

Hard throwing right-hander Angel Felipe pitched the eighth inning for the Missions. His control of his fastball was a factor in the RoughRiders adding an insurance run that inning. Sandro Fabian hit a one-out double and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. He came around to score following a passed ball from Chandler Seagle.
