Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
The Hamilton Bulldogs took a 2-0 series lead over the Manitoba Moose at the Copps Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. Mario Bliznak and Dan Sexton scored both of Manitoba's goals as they fell to the Bulldogs 8-2. Both Moose goaltenders saw ice time. Cory Schneider played 32 minutes and made 17 saves while Daren Machesney played 27 minutes and made 12 saves.
The second game of the best-of-7 series was more exciting and high-paced than the first. The Hamilton Bulldogs opened the scoring at 6:32 with a powerplay goal by David Desharnis from P.K. Subban; it was Hamilton's first powerplay goal in their last 23 tries.
Manitoba Moose player, Jordan Schroeder received a two minute penalty for interference at 6:08 to give the Bulldogs a one-man advantage. However, the Moose didn't fold; they started getting a lot of solid chances in front of the net with five minutes left in the first period. Tom Galvin took a snap shot from the point, with Dusty Collins and Tommy Maxwell screening Cedrick Desjardins; the Bulldogs goalie made a glove hand save to keep a 1-0 lead.
But the Manitoba Moose would soon break the goose egg; at 19:10, Manitoba scored their first goal of the series. Bliznak tipped the puck going wide from a shot by Brian Salcido, making the score tied at one.
The scoring in the second period was started by Hamilton. Grant Stevenson made a pass from the corner of the rink - Ryan Russell re-directed it to put the Bulldogs up 2-1 at 2:24.
Afterwards, the Moose had a little trouble staying out of the penalty box and it ended up giving them some grief. Travis Ramsey took a two minute penalty for interference at 7:31, and at 8:19 Galvin went to the box for hooking; giving Hamilton a two-man advantage.
Thirty-one seconds later, the Bulldogs capitalized on the opportunity; Subban snagged the corner of Manitoba's net at 8:50, the pass coming from Brock Trotter to make it 3-1 Bulldogs.
After Galvin's penalty was served, Manitoba's Guillaume Desbiens went to the box for a two minute slashing call resulting in another powerplay goal at the hands of the Bulldogs. Mike Glumac tipped a shot from Mike Vernace giving Hamilton the three-goal lead.
At 12:19 the Bulldogs struck again; Trotter carried the puck from behind Manitoba's goal and stuffed it through the legs of Schneider, Bulldogs lead 5-1. Machesney took over between the pipes after the goal.
With six second left in the period, Trotter added another point to his tally by batting the puck out of the air and into Manitoba's goal. The Manitoba Moose trail 6-1 heading into the third period.
In the final period the Moose started to regain ground. The Bulldogs' Ryan White took a two minute penalty for delay of game 25 seconds in. Thirteen seconds later, Sexton put one past Desjardins with a pass from Galvin, closing the gap by one and making the score 6-2.
However, the Bulldogs received a penalty shot after Machesney poke-checked J.T. Wyman while on a break-away. Wyman upped the Bulldogs score to seven, capitalizing on the penalty shot by putting the puck in the net on his backhand. Hamilton was also shorthanded when the goal went in; Subban went in the box for tripping at 1:53.
Desbiens received a penalty for interference at 12:46, giving Hamilton their first powerplay of the period. At 13:44 the Bulldogs would claim their fifth powerplay goal of the afternoon; Alex Henry took a low shot from the blue line that went in the net on Machesney's blocker side.
The final score in game two of the North Division Semi-Final, 8-2 Bulldogs.
