
Bulldogs, Islanders Prevail on Day 1

CORPUS CHRISTI - On Day 1 of the Kleberg Bank College Classic, the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Islanders came away with victories at Whataburger Field. The Bulldogs edged UC Santa Barbara 7-4 in the opener while the Islanders beat Nicholls State, 12-1.
Mississippi State first baseman Josh Hatcher belted two homers while lefty Konnor Pilkington picked up a victory by giving up two unearned runs through five innings. Jake Mangum and Luke Alexander also collected two hits a piece. UC Santa Barbara's bright spot was shortstop Andrew Martinez, who picked up three RBI.
The Islanders scored 12 runs over the contest's opening five frames, while right-hander Dustin Lacaze dazzled over 8.1 innings and gave up just a solo homer in the ninth inning.
On Saturday, the Colonels take on Mississippi State at 2 p.m. followed by the Islanders against UC Santa Barbara at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online, at the Whataburger Field box office, or by calling 361-561-HOOK.
