Bugs fall in preseason game

ODESSA, TX - In their only preseason contest before the start of the 2007-2008 CHL regular season, the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs lost to the Odessa Jackalopes by a final score of 5-3 on Saturday night.

New Mudbugs forward Darryl Lloyd scored twice, returning defenseman Ryan Fairbarn assisted on all 3 of Bossier-Shreveport's goals and Joe Ori added two assists in the losing effort. Six of the eight goals scored in the penalty-filled game happened on the power play.

Odessa struck first with a power play goal from Jocelyn Dubord at 6:16 of the opening period, but with five minutes to go in the first, the ‘Bugs got even on a power play goal of their own. Ori and Fairbarn set up Lloyd to tie the game up at one after a first period in which the teams combined for 11 minor penalties.

Bossier-Shreveport came out hot in the second, scoring two more power play goals in the first 6:10 of the period. Just 11 seconds into an early-period man advantage, it was Lloyd's second tally of the night against the Jackalopes' Bryan Worosz from Brett Smith and Fairbarn at the 1:46 mark. Just over four minutes later, Ori and Fairbarn set up defenseman Jason Basile for another power play goal and a 3-1 Mudbugs lead. But before the second frame was over, Odessa would tie the game back up. Goals only 1:49 apart from Brian Swiniarski on the power play and Nathan Ward at even strength got the Jackalopes even after two.

In the final period, Dubord got his second goal of the night, again on the power play, at the 3:25 mark to put Odessa back on top to stay. John Kozoriz scored later in the period to extend the Jacks' lead to the final margin of 5-3. With just over three minutes remaining, Fairbarn took on Odessa 's Alex Dunn in the game's only fight.

In net for the Mudbugs, John DeCaro started the game and surrendered just one goal on 15 shots in 32 minutes before handing the game over to Ken Carroll. Carroll took the loss for Bossier-Shreveport, stopping 12 of 16 shots. Alexandre Vincent earned the win with a perfect 12 save second-half of the contest.

The Jackalopes out shot the Mudbugs 31-27 in the game, and the Mudbugs finished 3-for-11 on the power play, while Odessa was 3-for-14.

Up next for Bossier-Shreveport is the start of the regular season next Friday night on the road against Mississippi . Then on Saturday, the ‘Bugs will play their home opener in front of the CenturyTel Center fans, taking on the Texas Brahmas at 7:05 pm.
