(LOS ANGELES, CA) - The Buffalo Destroyers ended their three game road trip as the Los Avengers got the better of Buffalo 65-14 in front of 11,410 fans Friday night at the Staples Center.
QB Kevin Mason made his first start under center since June 14, 2000 but didn't stay long as he left the game early in the second quarter after he went head first into the wall trying to make a tackle after an interception. Mason suffered a strained neck. FB/LB Mike Guazzo also left the game in the second quarter after he sustained a shoulder strain.
Backup QB Chris Sanders replaced Mason and got Buffalo on the board right before halftime as he hit WR/DB Jason Collins-Baker in the endzone for a 14 yard score. The touchdown was the first of Collins-Baker's career.
Sanders scored the second Destroyers touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter as he scrambled from pressure and ran it in from eight yards out. Sanders connected with OS Jarrail Jackson on the two-point conversion..
Sanders finished 12 of 33 for 127 yards and one touchdown. Sanders was also the team's leading rusher with two carries for 10 yards and a touchdown. Mason completed one pass for three yards before his injury.
Jackson had a career high 210 all-purpose yards and a career high seven kick returns for 158 yards. His total yards was also a game high and Destroyers season high. He was the Destroyers leading receiver with four catches for 52 yards. Collins-Baker had four receptions for 38 yards and a touchdown.
DS JoJo Polk led the way on defense with four tackles and one pass breakup. DS Dwaine Carpenter added 2.5 tackles and one pass breakup. OL/DL Dwayne Sabb recorded his first sack of the season.
The Destroyers (4-8) return home next Saturday, April 26 to host the Indiana Firebirds at 7:00 p.m. at the HSBC Arena.
