DES MOINES, IA - The Des Moines Buccaneers are pleased and excited to announce the addition of USHL alum and Des Moines native, Garrett Cecere.

Head Coach Matt Curley says of Cecere, "fresh off concluding a successful playing career, I am excited to welcome Garrett to our coaching staff. As a homegrown product of Des Moines, Garrett is no stranger to the importance and value of Buccaneer hockey to this community. He brings a wealth of playing experience and understanding of what it takes to develop into a successful player, both on and off the ice. His energy for learning and desire to teach is infectious and our players will benefit greatly from both. His work ethic as a player will translate seamlessly into the details and diligence that is required as a coach. The Des Moines Buccaneers are better today with the addition of Garrett to our team!"

The 27-year-old former Defenseman started his career in 2009 at Shattuck St. Mary's on the 14U AAA team followed by the 2010-11 season on the Shattuck 16U AAA team. Cecere spent most of the next season in Janesville playing with the Jets of the North American Hockey League before coming to the USHL. He spent time with the Dubuque Fighting Saints, Tri-City Storm, and Sioux Falls Stampede. Garrett's college career began at Colorado College before transferring to Northeastern University. After college, Cecere played four seasons in the ECHL with the Maine Mariners, Tulsa Oilers and Reading Royals.

"We are very pleased to add Garrett Cecere to the Buccaneer coaching staff and welcome him back to the city of Des Moines. Garrett brings a wealth of recent playing experience including numerous games at the USHL, NCAA and professional level. This experience, as well as his energy and positive approach, will be a huge benefit to our players and organization," said Senior Advisor and General Manager, Scott Owens.

Through his time in the USHL, Garrett played in 171 games, had 68 points and made playoff appearances in both of his seasons with the Stampede. While in Sioux Falls, he led all Stampede defensemen with 38 points in 56 games. His senior year of college at Northeastern, Cecere was named Assistant Captain. While in his final season with the Reading Royals of the ECHL (2021-22), Garrette had 20 points in 70 games and assisted the team through 13 games in the playoffs.

Garrett, the newest addition to the Bucs hockey operations staff, added, "I am extremely honored and excited for the opportunity to help develop the next generation of Des Moines Buccaneers and teach them what it takes to advance to the next levels. Coming back to my hometown and being able to coach the team that I fell in love with as a kid is truly a dream come true. I have the utmost respect for the Bucs management, coaches and staff as people and as hockey minds and I cannot wait to help bring this team back to the winning culture that Des Moines has had for so long."
