Laredo Bucks News Release
LAREDO, Texas - The Laredo Bucks and Laredo Entertainment Center announced today that they will work in conjunction with EarlyAct Rotary and United Day School to help collect donations of supplies to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina. The LEC, the three year old home of the Bucks, will be a drop off point this Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for those wishing to donate supplies to the relief efforts. For more information contact Bucks Director of Community Relations Nicole Kupaks at (956) 718-BUCKS (2825) or log onto www.laredobucks.com.
Some items which are needed for donation include: non-perishable food items, insect repellant, paper towels, first aid supplies, toilet paper, baby formula, canned goods, can openers, diapers, shampoo and conditioner, soap, trash bags, plastic forks, knives and spoons, bread, washcloths, bath towels and blankets.
"The need is so great right now," Bucks President John Beckelhymer said. "This is the most devastating natural disaster to ever hit the United States. The Bucks and LEC are committed to working with EarlyAct Rotary at United Day School to help collect as many of these vitally needed supplies as possible."
Refugees from Hurricane Katrina are being housed across South Texas, including Corpus Christi, San Antonio and Houston.
Early Act Rotary is a school-wide service club for elementary students from ages 5-13. It is sponsored by the Laredo Gateway Rotary. The mission and operation of EarlyAct are closely linked to the ideals of Rotary and provide the foundation and natural succession into InterAct (the high school sponsored Rotary program).
"This is an opportunity for our students to get involved," Rita Peters Headmistress at United Day School said. "EarlyAct teaches our students to think about other people. They learn to share what they have with others."
Donations will be collected at the LEC and also at United Day School. They will then be transported to Lake Charles, Louisiana where Rotarians will help with the distribution.
Once again the LEC will serve as a collection point this Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
