Laredo Bucks News Release


LAREDO, Texas - The Laredo Bucks will travel to Corpus Christi tonight to take on the New Mexico Scorpions at Memorial Coliseum in a pre season game. Fans can get tickets for $5 for the game in Corpus Christi by contacting the Rayz office at (361) 814-7825.

The game will NOT be broadcast on 94.9 FM.

FORWARDS
Igor Agarunov---Forward
Agarunov, 6'1 190-pounds, began his Major Junior career with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League during the 1999-2000 season. Prior to the 2001-02 campaign he was traded to the Kootenay Ice, where he helped the team capture the Memorial Cup that season. During the Ice championship run he had four goals in 22 games, including a goal in the championship game. While in Kootenay, Agarunov teamed with current Bucks teammate Steven Makway on the Ice Memorial Cup title team. In his last two years with the Ice, the native of Delta, British Columbia, posted a career high 12 goals and 20 assists each year.


Hans Benson---Forward
Benson, a native of Menlo Park, California, is the first American born player to be signed by the Bucks this off-season. Benson, 6'0" 225-pounds, spent last season with the Selkirk Steelers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. He had 12 goals, 21 assists, as well as a team and league leading 371 PIMS in 55 games. Selkirk was 44-18-1 in the regular season and captured the MJHL playoff championship this past season. Benson spent with 2002-03 season in the SJHL with the Nipawin Hawks where he played with former Buck Bobby Chad Mitchell. Aaron Starr, who played with the Bucks in the CHL playoffs last year, played in the MJHL during the 2003-04 regular season against Benson.

Jeff Bes---Forward
Bes, who is from Tillsonburg, Ontario, enters his 13th professional season and second with Laredo. He was selected to start for the Southern Conference team at the 2004 CHL All-Star Game in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bes, 6'1" 190-pounds, led the CHL with 78 points as he helped the Bucks post a CHL best 48-8-8 record and capture the 2003-04 CHL Governors' Cup. He was second in the league with 16 power play goals and third with 39 total goals. He tied for the league lead with four shorthanded tallies. In the playoffs Bes was the second leading scorer in the CHL with 18 points, including four goals, as he helped the Bucks become the first team in CHL / WPHL combined history to rally from a 3-1 finals series deficit and capture the President's Cup. Bes, a member of the potent ‘Three Amigo' line, had a CHL best 24-game point streak that was the second longest in Bucks' franchise history and led the CHL at plus 42. In the CHL Best of the Best poll, Bes was selected as the Best Playmaker, second Best Stick Handler and Penalty Killer, and third in the Best Overall Player category. Bes was a third round selection by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1992 NHL draft.

Brent Cullaton---Forward
Cullaton, from Petawawa, Ontario, captured the fastest skater award during the skills competition at the 2004 CHL All-Star Game in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was elected to start for the Southern Conference All-Star team. Cullaton, 6'0" 220-pounds, will start the season in training camp with San Antonio of the AHL. The Rampage can choose to assign Cullaton to Laredo and can recall him at any time. Cullaton, who wore the ‘C' as captain for Laredo last year, played in his 500th pro game on October 18th in Corpus Christi. He also recorded his 200th career goal and 300th career assist last season. In 39 games with the Bucks he totaled 25 goals and 50 assists. In 31 games with San Antonio he tallied five goals and 16 points. Cullaton, who is entering his ninth professional season, was the leading scorer in the CHL at the time of his call up to San Antonio of the AHL in January. He returned to the Bucks for the post-season. Cullaton led all players in scoring during the playoffs with 20 points. He added four goals as the Bucks captured the President's Cup.

Tyler Eady---Forward
Eady, 6'2" 215-pounds, played this past season for the North Bay Skyhawks of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. He had 22 goals, 33 assists in 33 games and 90 PIMs. He helped the Skyhawks post a 34-7-4-3 record and the Eastern Division regular season title. Eady, from Onaping, Ontario, helped the Skyhawks to the NOJHL championship with a four games to none sweep of the Soo Thunderbirds in the Finals. He posted nine goals in 11 games and 20 total points in the playoffs. Eady spent his first three season of junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League. He played with the Windsor Spitfires and the Mississauga Ice Dogs. He was traded from Windsor to Mississauga as part of the deal for Jason Spezza, who was the #2 overall selection in the 2001 NHL Draft by the Ottawa Senators. During his second year in the OHL he played for Don Cherry, the Canadian Broadcast Company analyst for Hockey Night In Canada, who was the coach and owner of the Mississauga Ice Dogs.

Lennon Eriksson---Forward
Lennon, 5'11" 180-pounds, has been playing overseas in his native Sweden.

James Hiebert---Forward
Hiebert was an integral part of the Bucks championship run, tying for the CHL post-season lead with eight goals. Hiebert, who was a rookie this past season, had 16 goals in 61 games in the regular season. He totaled 42 points and 185 PIMs as the Bucks posted a CHL best 48-8-8 record. Hiebert, a 5'11" 185-pound forward, is a native of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. He played his junior hockey in Swift Current in the Western Hockey League. In the CHL playoffs he had 14 points in 15 games as the Bucks captured the President's Cup.

Scott Kelman---Forward
Kelman, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, played 17 games last year with the Rampage. The Bucks have a working agreement with San Antonio. He had one goal and four assists. Kelman, 6'3" 215-pounds, also spent 47 games with the Augusta Lynx of the ECHL last year. He had 15 goals and 32 assists to go with 104 PIMs. He was the 15th player taken overall by the Coyotes in the 1999 NHL Draft. The Bucks now have 29 players in training camp. During the 2002-03 season he played with the Jackson Bandits in the ECHL, where he was teammates with Bucks forward Jeff Bes.

Darryl Lloyd---Forward
Lloyd was selected as the OHL Western Conference's Hardest Worker in the Coach's Poll during the 2002-03 season. The 5'10 190-pound forward spent the previous three seasons in the OHL with the Windsor Spitfires. This past year he recorded 21 goals in 68 games and totaled 33 points and 116 PIMs. Lloyd was named Darryl by his mother Darlene, who named her son after Toronto Maple Leafs forward Darryl Sittler. Lloyd wore number 27 in Windsor, which was Sittler's number as a Leaf. Sittler, an NHL Hall of Famer, holds the NHL record for points in a single game with 10 (four goals, six assists) during the 1976 NHL regular season. Lloyd attended the NHL Nashville Predators camp in 2003. In three OHL season he totaled 44 goals, 39 assists and 287 PIMs. He played part of one season in Windsor with Jason Spezza, who was the second overall selection by the Ottawa Senators in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Adam Paiement---Forward
Paiement, who is from Mississauga, Ontario, joined the Bucks late last season and played in three regular season games. He totaled a goal and an assist to go with six PIMs. In the playoffs the 6'1" 190-pound forward was an important factor with five goals and one assist in 16 games as he helped the Bucks capture the President's Cup. Paiement played one game last year with San Antonio in the AHL. He played his junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League. In 207 career junior hockey games with the Belleville Bulls he had 74 goals and 89 assists. Adam is the son of former NHLer Wilf Paiement.

Domenic Parlatore---Forward
The 26-year old center iceman from Niagara Falls, Ontario, had his best pro season when he tied for third in the British National League with 43 goals in 2001-02 while playing with the Paisley Pirates. He was second in the BNL with 95 points and was selected to the All-Star team. Prior to his stint in the BNL, he spent two years in Germany playing with Hamm. He totaled 73 goals in the two years. Parlatore spent the majority of last season with Merano in the top Italian league. He had 12 goals in 28 games and finished with 32 points.

Steve Simoes---Forward
In 58 regular season games the 6'2" 205 pound forward scored 17 goals and totaled 34 points to go with 116 PIMs in his rookie campaign. In the playoffs Simoes scored four goals in 16 games as he helped the Bucks capture the President's Cup title. He was terrific in a defensive role, often matching up against the high powered lines of the opponents.

Brent Varty---Forward
Varty, who is from Oshawa, Ontario, was the second leading scorer in the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League this past year with the Wellington Dukes. In 48 games he had 47 goals and 44 assists to total 91 points. As team captain he helped Wellington post a 37-5-3 regular season record and was selected as the East Division MVP and was also an OPJAHL All-Star Game selection. He had 11 goals in 19 playoff games. During the 2002-03 season the 6'1" 190-pound Varty played in 48 games, had 37 goals and 37 assists for 74 points as the Dukes posted a phenomenal 47-1-1 record and captured both the regular season and OPJAHL playoff titles. Varty was selected to the OPJAHL All-Star Game. The Dukes advanced to the prestigious Royal Bank Cup tournament and lost in the semifinals. In 36 playoff games he tallied 15goals.

John Winstanley---Forward
Winstanley, 5'8" 185-pounds, spent last season with the Georgetown Raiders of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League. In 28 games he totaled 28 goals, 26 assists and 20 PIMs as the Raiders posted a 40-5-3-1 record and captured the West Division regular season title. Despite playing just 28 games, Winstanley was selected to the OPJHL All-Star Game. In the hardest shot contest he gunned a slap shot 91-mph to win it. He also totaled a goal and three assists in the game. Winstanley was selected as Player of the Month his first month in the Ontario Hockey League during the 2001-02 season. Winstanley also plays roller hockey. During the 2003-04 Great Lakes Inline Hockey League season he led the GLIHL in scoring with 30 goals and 57 points with the Brampton Nationals.


DEFENSE
Calle Aslund---Forward
Aslund, 6'2" 200-pounds, was selected in the eighth round by the Buffalo Sabres, 234th overall, in the 2001 NHL entry draft. Aslund, who is from Haninge, Sweden, has played for Huddinge IK of the Swedish Junior League the past several seasons, on both their Under-18 and Under-20 teams. He also represented Sweden at the Under-18 tournament held in Finland, where he registered no points in six games while picking up six PIMs.

Paul Elliott---Defense
Elliott, 6'1 210-pounds, was a fifth round draft choice of the Edmonton Oilers in the 1998 NHL draft. He spent the past two seasons with the San Antonio Rampage, the Bucks American Hockey League affiliate. In 38 games had one assist and 30 PIMs. Elliott played his junior hockey in the Western Hockey League. He spent parts his first three years with Lethbridge, then played with Medicine Hat, Kamloops and Regina. During his 16-year old season, the 1996-97 campaign, the Lethbridge Hurricanes advanced to the Memorial Cup tournament and lost in the championship game. As a 20-year old in the 2000-01 season he played in the Memorial Cup tournament with the Regina Pats and was selected to the All-Star team. Elliott has spent the last three years at the AHL level. Two with San Antonio and one with Utah.

Dion Hyman---Defense
Hyman, 6'2" 205-pounds, has played each of his first two professional seasons with the Bucks. He registered the biggest goal in Laredo franchise history at 8:43 of overtime of Game Seven of the 2004 CHL President's Cup Finals. Hyman scored a career high eight goals last year in the regular season as he helped the Bucks post a CHL best 48-8-8 record. In the playoffs he added two more goals. During his two seasons with the Laredo, Hyman has scored several milestone goals. He tallied the 300th goal in franchise history on November 11th, 2003 against Amarillo, and then added the 400th goal in franchise history on January 10th, 2004 against Corpus Christi. With 361 PIMs in two seasons, Hyman is the Bucks career franchise all-time penalty minute leader. He also is the franchise career leader with 88 minors. Hyman is second on the Bucks career franchise record list with 27 majors, fourth with 98 games played, and has the fourth best plus / minus at plus 41.

Malcolm Hutt---Defense
Hutt, 5'11" 170-pounds, spent last season with the Peoria Rivermen and the Alaska Aces in the ECHL. In 48 combined games he had one goal and six assists. Hutt, who is from Wellesley, Ontario, played four years of major junior hockey with the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League. He was a teammate of Bucks forward Adam Paiement while in Belleville.

Brandon Janes---Defense
Janes, from Richmond, British Columbia, spent two games last season overseas in Germany. His last full season was in 2000-01 with the Chilliwack Chiefs of the British Columbia Hockey League. Janes is 5'9" 170-pounds. His first three years of junior hockey were spent with the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League. In his final junior season he had nine goals and 41 points in 42 games with Chilliwack.

Phillippe Lauze---Defense
Lauze, who is 6'2" 225-pounds, played five years of major junior hockey in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Rimouski Oceanic. This past season he totaled a career high six goals, 18 assists and 24 points to go with 124 PIMs in 68 games. Lauze, who is from Montreal, Quebec, helped lead Rimouski to the QMJHL playoffs three of the last four years.

Steven Makway---Defense
Makway, who is 6'4" 225 pounds, hails from Trail, British Columbia. He spent last year with the Battlefords' North Stars of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Makway had 11 goals and 44 points in 36 games and totaled 208 PIMs. Makway played on a Memorial Cup championship team with the 2001-2002 WHL Kootenay Ice team that captured the championship. Makway also spent time with the Tri City Americans of the WHL

Oriel McHugh---Defense
McHugh, 6'3 220 pounds, played four years of college hockey for the Catamounts. In 116 games he had 13 goals, 10 assists and 86 PIMs. McHugh was the on-ice captain for the Catamounts his senior season. He had a game winning goal in overtime in a December 20th game against Connecticut. Illustrating the physical presence he brings, during his freshman season McHugh checked an opposing player into the boards, and the force of the collision shattered the glass. He hails from St. Laurent, Quebec which is also the home town of his favorite player and recent NHL Hall of Fame selection, defenseman Raymond Bourque. McHugh was an honor roll student at Herzliah High School, and then attended prep school at Deerfield. During his two years at Deerfield he was an all-star defenseman, played tight end on the football team and also participated in crew. He graduated with a B.S. in Community Development and Applied Economics. The University of Vermont has produced such NHL stars as reigning NHL MVP Martin St. Louis, a 1997 graduate and John LeClair, graduate 1991.

Barry Rost---Defense
Rost, 6'2" 215-pounds, spent the latter half of the 2003-04 season with the Manitoulin Wild in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. Manitoulin is the largest freshwater island in the world, located on Lake Huron, measuring 110 miles long. Rost had three goals, one assist and 36 PIMs in 20 games with Manitoulin. Rost, who hails from Brandon, Manitoba, also spent 17 games this past season with the Neepawa Natives of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and had two goals, seven assists and 76 PIMs.

Josh Young---Defense
Young, 5‘11" 210-pounds, helped the Campbellton Tigers capture the 2003-04 Maritime Junior A Hockey League championship. The Tigers were 35-12-4 in the regular season. In 46 games this season with Campbellton, Young had 12 assists and 193 penalty minutes. In the playoffs he added a goal, four assists and 32 PIMs. Young, who hails from Orillia, Ontario, spent two seasons with Campbellton. He played his first three years of junior hockey with the Huntsville Wildcats of the OPJAHL. He served as captain his last two years in Huntsville and captured the teams Kirk Evans Memorial award, given to the most dedicated player.


GOALIES
Chad Cullaton---Goalie
Born in Cambridge, Ontario, now lives in Ajax, Ontario. Played junior hockey with the Pembroke Lumberkings from 1994-97 Central Junior Hockey League, Tier II. 6'0" 200-pound. Had a stint playing professional soccer with the Kansas City Attack 1997-98. Married with two children.Younger brother of Bucks forward Brent Cullaton.

David Guerrera---Goalie
Guerrera, who hails from St. Leonard, Quebec, posted spectacular numbers last year in his rookie season. He went 26-4-5 with a 2.10 GAA and a save percentage of 0.932 as he helped the Bucks to a CHL best 48-8-8 regular season record and the President's Cup playoff title. Guerrera had the second best save percentage in the CHL, was tied for the second best GAA, tied for fourth in shutouts with four and was fifth in wins. The 5'11" 190-pound goalie captured the CHL Rookie of the Year award for his performance in the regular season. He cemented his case when he started 12 straight games and went 10-0-2 with a 1.81 GAA. In the post-season Guerrera was equally as brilliant, posting an 8-2 record with a GAA of 1.65 and a save percentage of 0.934. Guerrera's save percentage was tied for the second best in the post-season, his GAA was third best and he was a perfect 3-0 in overtime. He helped the Bucks become the first team in CHL history to overcome a 3-1 deficit in the finals to win the President's Cup title. For his performance Guerrera was named the CHL Playoff MVP. On home ice Guerrera was even better going 14-0-1 with a 1.65 GAA and a 0.934 save percentage. The Bucks were 27-2-3 at the Laredo Entertainment Center and set a CHL record by winning 21 straight home games. Prior to coming to Laredo Guerrera played four years of college hockey at Wayne State, located in Detroit. He had a save percentage over 0.900 all four years of college and helped lead his team to three straight College Hockey America conference titles and a berth in the 2003 NCAA tournament. He graduated with a degree in exercise science.

Kevin Lachance---Goalie
Lachance, 5'10" 175-pounds, was 30-10-4 for the Cowithan Valley Capitols in the British Columbia Hockey League. He posted a save percentage of 0.918 and a goals allowed average of 2.62 and led the league in wins. Lachance was the MVP of the BCHL Coastal Division during the regular season as he led his team to a 38-13-4-5 record. Lachance, who is from Vanier, Quebec, which is near Quebec City, spent three seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Quebec Remparts. He posted a 60-56-15 record in the QMJHL. Lachance was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week twice during the 2001-02 QMJHL season. During the 2002-03 QMJHL season he helped the Remparts to the Memorial Cup tournament. He attended NHL camp with the Florida Panthers in 2002. Lachance has an older brother Ryan, who is playing professionally as a goalie with the Saguemay Fiord, located in Quebec.
