Varty, who is from Oshawa, Ontario, was the second leading scorer in the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League this past year with the Wellington Dukes. In 48 games he had 47 goals and 44 assists to total 91 points. As team captain he helped Wellington post a 37-5-3 regular season record and was selected as the East Division MVP and was also an OPJAHL All-Star Game selection. He had 11 goals in 19 playoff games.
"Brent has good offensive skills and is a big grinding winger who plays in traffic," said Wellington Dukes head coach Tod Lavender. "Brent competes hard and is very dedicated to the sport both on and off the ice. He was a very good leader for us in Wellington, willing to do what it takes to win."
During the 2002-03 season the 6'1" 190-pound Varty played in 48 games, had 37 goals and 37 assists for 74 points as the Dukes posted a phenomenal 47-1-1 record and captured both the regular season and OPJAHL playoff titles. Varty was selected to the OPJAHL All-Star Game. The Dukes advanced to the prestigious Royal Bank Cup tournament and lost in the semifinals. In 36 playoff games he tallied 15goals.
Young, 5â11" 210-pounds, helped the Campbellton Tigers capture the 2003-04 Maritime Junior A Hockey League championship. The Tigers were 35-12-4 in the regular season. In 46 games this season with Campbellton, Young had 12 assists and 193 penalty minutes. In the playoffs he added a goal, four assists and 32 PIMs.
"Young is a physical defenseman who moves the puck well," said Bucks head coach Terry Ruskowski. "He has good size and was able to put up some good penalty totals the last couple of years."
Young, who hails from Orillia, Ontario, spent two seasons with Campbellton. He played his first three years of junior hockey with the Huntsville Wildcats of the OPJAHL. He served as captain his last two years in Huntsville and captured the teams Kirk Evans Memorial award, given to the most dedicated player.
"I am excited about signing with Laredo," said Young. "I have been looking forward to turning pro since I started playing junior hockey."
Young will bring effort and intensity to the Bucks. "Hard work, lots of hard work," said Young when describing his style of play.
