Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, AL - Top Cubs prospect Kris Bryan homered twice and finished with six RBI as the Birmingham Barons lost their third game in a row to the Tennessee Smokies and fourth overall, falling by a score of 12-1 at Smokies Park.
A three-run home run by Bryant in the bottom of the first inning against Myles Jaye (0-4, 5.25) gave the Smokies an early 3-0 lead. Bryant wasn't done, tagging Jaye for his second home run in the fifth to give the Smokies a 5-1lead and giving Bryant a league-best eight home runs on the season.
Jaye allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits over 5.0 IP in picking up his fourth loss of the season.
Catcher Kevan Smith accounted for the Barons only run in the game, swatting a solo home run in the top of the second to cut the Smokies lead to 3-1. The home run was Smith's second in the series.
However, it was all Smokies from that point as Bryant narrowly missed his third home run in the seventh, settling for a two-run double as Tennessee tacked on six more runs in the seventh and eighth innings against relievers Jarrett Casey and Ryan Kussmaul.
Dae-Eun Rhee (2-1, 3.25) picked up the win, allowing a run on three hits over 3.0 IP as the Smokies improved to 19-14 on the season.
With the loss, the Barons dropped their fourth in a row and their 11th in the last 13 games, falling to 12-20 on the season. They'll will look to rebound tomorrow night as LHP Scott Snodgres (1-2, 5.46) takes the hill against RHP Pierce Johnson (1-1, 3.86). First pitch is scheduled for a 6:15 PM CDT on Thursday.
