SYRACUSE, New York - The Silver Knights began their two game road trip in the Midwest today taking on the St Louis Ambush in a 12pm EST game. The Silver Knights were joined by new comer Joey Tavernese for the first time this season, joining several other former Lancer players. The Silver Knights would get shut out in the 4th quarter before falling to the St Louis Ambush 5-3.
The first quarter was a back and forth affair after ending in a 2-2 tie. The Ambush were able to get things started out on their home floor scoring just 5:15 into the game off of a rebound goal by Cody Costakis. But the Silver Knights would answer back with two unanswered goals by JJ Gibson, and leading goal scorer Antonio Manfut on what was his 11th goal of the season. Both of the Silver Knight goals coming on powerplays for the visiting squad. The Ambush were able to answer back late in the 1st quarter to tie things up before the end of the first quarter came to a close.
The second quarter started very similar to the first with the Ambush getting on the board first just 2:30 into the quarter. The goal gave the Ambush their first lead of the game since the opening goal of the match. The Silver Knights were able to get several good looks and dangerous opportunities but none that would find the back of the net. The Ambush were able to add one more goal to their lead with just 4 minutes remaining in the second quarter. The first half came to a close with the Silver Knights trailing 4-2. Bryan OQuinn was able to keep things close thanks to 15 first half saves.
But the Silver Knights were able to cut the Ambush lead down to 1 just 3 minutes into the second half. Newcomer Joey Travernese was able to find the back of the net in his first game for the Knights. The Silver Knights would continue to put on pressure to the Ambush but could not find the back of the net for the remainder of the quarter. But the Ambush were able to get past OQuinn once again with just 1 minute left in the quarter. The goal by Andre Hayne gave the Ambush another 2 goal lead heading into the final quarter of the game.
The Ambush took their 5-3 lead into the fourth quarter and would not look back. Both sides would remain scoreless in the final frame that would see the Ambush come out on top for just their second win of the season. Bryan OQuinn did all he could to keep the Silver Knights in the game coming up with 18 saves in the loss.
The Silver Knights will play again tomorrow night against the Cedar Rapids Rampage before returning home next Friday and Sunday with their own weekend double header. Join us at home next Friday, January 22nd as the Silver Knights will be visited by the St Louis Ambush and for their chance to revenge the loss.
