Austin Bruins News Release
While tempers flared in Aberdeen Friday, the Austin Bruins (22-10-1) kept their cool and earned their fourth consecutive victory in a 4-1 win over the Aberdeen WIngs (20-12-2) in front of a hostile crowd at the Odde Ice Center to move three points ahead of the Wings in the Central Division standings.
The Wings came out of the gate flying in the first period, outshooting the Bruins 8-1 in the opening minutes. Austin goaltender Nick Lehr (Roseville, MN) had to be solid in the early-going and stopped all nine Aberdeen shots in the opening frame. The Bruins scored the only goal of the period, when Josh Bretner (N. Potomac, MD) threw a puck through traffic from the point, before the rebound bounced onto the stick of Jay Dickman (Shoreview, MN), who put it away to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead after one.
Austin broke the game open in the second period, scoring three more goals, forcing Aberdeen to make a goaltender change from starter Chad Catt (Williamstown, MI) to backup Henry Dill (Columbus, OH). First, Alex Pettersson (Ockero, Sweden) set-up newcomer Casey Jerry (Hudson, WI) for a one-timer that would be Jerry s first career goal. Then Lucas Kohls (Forest Lake, MN) beat Catt five seconds into a power play to make it 3-0 Bruins. 21 seconds later, Drew Anderson (Rochester, MN) capitalized on a between-the-legs pass from Luke Dietsch (St. Paul, MN) to give the Bruins a 4-0 lead through two periods.
Aberdeen scored its only goal of the night early in the third period on the power-play, when Bjorn Sigurdarson (Reykjavik, Iceland) spun and lifted a shot into the top shelf from low in the circle. Lehr stopped 29 shots for his 20th victory of the season.
The two teams will battle one final time in Aberdeen Saturday night at 7:15pm. That game can be seen on fasthockey.com or heard on 1480AM KAUS in Austin. The Bruins will host the Wings for two weekend series (January 17-18, February 21-22) at Riverside Arena before the end of the regular season.
