Austin Bruins News Release

In the only scheduled NAHL game Wednesday night, the Austin Bruins (21-9-10) dialed up a dramatic finish in a 1-0 overtime win over the Brookings Blizzard (13-17-7) in a Central Division tilt at Riverside Arena in Austin.

Bruins rookie goaltender Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) set the tone for the game in the opening minute of the first period. On a Brookings 2-on-1, Kielly slid across his crease to rob Nate Colwell (Englewood, CO) on the doorstep. The 18-year-old netminder made seven saves in the frame. Across the way, Ryan Kubic (St. Andrews, MB) stopped all ten Austin shots to keep the game scoreless at the first intermission.

The ice tilted in the Bruins favor in the second period, due in part to Austin s stellar play in the neutral zone. Sustained pressure throughout much of the frame allowed the Bruins a 19-10 shots advantage in a still-scoreless game heading into the third.

Kubic stymied the Bruins again in the third, stopping all ten shots to force overtime. In his first start in 11 days, Kielly made key saves when called upon, finishing the game with 18.

In overtime, Bruins captain Brian Bachnak (Riverview, MI) capitalized on a Blizzard turnover to set up the game-winner. Bachnak fired a shot to Kubic s outside pad from the left circle, and Austin newcomer Alex Jasiek (St. Louis, MO), who came to the Bruins from Cedar Rapids of the USHL, buried the rebound at 2:45 of the extra period.

It was the only one of Austin s 31 shots to beat Kubic, but enough to move Austin to within four points of Minot in the Central Division standings with 20 games to play.

Austin will travel to Brookings Friday for the rematch. Game time is scheduled for 7:15pm and can be seen on fasthockey.com and heard on 1480AM KAUS in the Austin area.
