Brookings Blizzard News Release
In what proved to be a hard fought battle, the Brookings Blizzard were handed a 3-0 loss against the Austin Bruins, Friday night.
While the Bruins racked up 20 minutes in penalties, Brookings was unable to capitalize on any of the power plays.
Averaging 2.1 goals allowed per game, the Austin defense looked to be a well-functioning unit during the contest. Behind sound goaltending and defensive efforts, the Bruins were able to deny all 41 shots on goal by the Blizzard. Up nearly 7 from their average shots per game, Austin tallied 34 shots on goal fired at Brookings goalie, Austin Priebe.
Scoring just 7:12 into the first period to make the score 1-0, was Austin's Trey Dodd. Drew Anderson up the assist on the first goal. Leading the team in points for the night, Josh Bretner of Austin racked up one goal and one assist. The third and final goal came from Sam Kauppila . Additional assists for Austin came via Cory Dunn and Brennan Stanford who each chipped in one assist each.
Despite a strong performance by the Brookings penalty kill, which allowed powerplay goals, a persistent Bruins offense proved to be too much for the Blizzard. With 41 shots on goal by the Blizzard, Brookings just could not seem to find the net. The shots on goal far surpassed the team average this season of 29.2 shots per game.
Leading the team with four shots was Russ Jordan.
Bruins goaltender, Lehr, shut down all 41 of the Blizzard goal attempts. Priebe was able to save 31 of Austin's 34 shots. Four minor penalties and one Eric Brenk ejection landed Brookings with 18 penalty minutes.
The Blizzard will host the Bruins tonight at the Larson Ice Center for game two of the weekend series. The puck will drop at 7:15 pm.
