Austin Bruins News Release

For five years, people in Austin have circled this day on their calendars. Another Paint the Rink Pink has come and gone for the Austin Bruins and the fifth annual event was a huge success. In its first four seasons, the Bruins and its fans have raised over $100 thousand for breast cancer research. The official money raised Saturday won t be announced until next week, but was well over $25 thousand again.

On the ice, the Bruins (26-9-11) edged the Minnesota Magicians (15-29-1) 3-1 to complete an eight-game season sweep of their neighbors from the north. Additionally, with a Minot loss Saturday, the Bruins claimed sole-possession of first place in the Central Division.

The Magicians temporarily silenced the sold out crowd when Denis Shevyrin (Krefield, Germany) scored 3:40 into the game. The initial shot was stopped by Bruins goaltender Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN), but deflected up in the air and bounced off the top of the net. Shevyrin picked up the loose puck and stuffed a wraparound in to give Minnesota the early lead.

Austin tied the game two minutes later when Alex Jasiek (St. Louis, MN) set-up Tony Uglem (Moorhead, MN) on a wraparound pass that Uglem tapped in past Vaughan Ahrens (Plymouth, MN). The teams skated to the end of the period knotted at 1-1.

On a 4-on-4 in the second period, Cory Dunn (Trenton, MI) threw a perfect backdoor pass to Trevor Boyd (Muskegon, MI) for what turned out to be the game-winning goal at 7:49 of the frame. Boyd wasn t done, as he added an empty-netter late in the third to put the Magicians away.

Kielly stopped 13 shots in his 14th win of the season, while Ahrens saved 20 in the loss.

Next weekend, the Bruins open a home-and-home series Friday in Brookings against the Blizzard. Puck drop at the Larson Ice Center is scheduled for 7pm. Then Saturday, Austin returns home for the rematch at Riverside Arena. Both games can be seen on fasthockey.com.

While the total money raised during Paint the Rink Pink 2015 is still being added up, the players jersey auction alone raised over $25 thousand after the game Saturday, capping off a memorable night for the Bruins and the Austin community.
