Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-Just weeks after playing his final NCAA games at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and making his professional debut for the Tampa Bay Lightning, former Waterloo Black Hawks forward J.T. Brown has been selected to represent the United States at the 2012 Men's Hockey World Championships.
The 16-team event sanctioned by the International Ice Hockey Federation will be held in Finland and Sweden from May 4th through 20th. Seventeen members of the U.S. Men's National team were announced Wednesday, with additional players to be added as NHL clubs are eliminated form the Stanley Cup playoffs in the coming weeks. Brown is one of seven players preparing for his first experience with the U.S. Men's squad.
As a UMD sophomore, Brown led the Bulldogs with 24 goals this season. His 47 points helped the school to the NCAA Regional Finals one year after winning a national title. Brown was the Most Outstanding Player of the Frozen Four for that championship squad. He played in his first game for the Lightning against the Winnipeg Jets on March 31st. Completing the schedule in Tampa, Brown notched his first NHL point in his fifth game - the Lightning's season finale on April 7th, also against the Jets - with an assist during a 4-3 victory. He was +2 in the contest; that was also Brown's NHL season-ending plus-minus rating.
Brown played two seasons in Waterloo, earning distinction as a 2009-2010 All-USHL Second Team selection. That winter he led the Hawks and was third in league scoring with 77 points from 34 goals and 43 assists. As a rookie in 2008-2009, Brown averaged a point per appearance with 14 goals and 22 assists in 36 games. His 65 career, regular season assists rank 11th among junior era Black Hawks, while his 113 points are 14th.
Brown's Waterloo linemate Craig Smith starred at the World Championships last spring, leading the United States with three goals and recording six total points. Black Hawks alumni and current NHL players Joe Pavelski, Jason Blake, and Andrew Alberts have also all appeared in the World Championships since 2007. Brown is the eleventh player to skate for the Hawks during the franchise's junior era before being later selected for the U.S. Men's National Team.
