Brown and Testa Team up to Take out Laredo 5-1

Wichita Wingnuts News Release

Laredo, TX (June 17, 2014) - Tim Brown worked his sixth straight quality start and limited the Laredo Lemurs, the American Association's top offense, to just one run in 7.0 innings on Tuesday night in a 5-1 victory at Uni-Trade Stadium. He was helped by a 2-4 performance from left fielder Carlo Testa who was responsible for all four RBI the Wingnuts were credited with in the game.

The Wingnuts (22-11) struck first against Laredo fill-in starter Mike Shreves (1-1) in the second inning. David Amberson led off the inning with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a single by Ryan Khoury that caromed off of third baseman Josh Scheffert's glove. Amberson raced home on a passed ball by catcher Angel Flores to put the Nuts on top and then Testa ripped a single through the right side to score Khoury and put Wichita in front 2-0.

Brown (5-1) would allow his only run of the night in the third, when Scheffert hit a one out homer to left in the third inning that cut the lead in half. Brown would end up allowing a hit in six of the innings he threw, but never gave up more than one in an inning. The quality start was the rotation's 22nd in 33 games to start to the season. Brown currently has a league-leading five wins.

The short-handed pitching rotation of the Lemurs was pushed to the limit as Pete Incaviglia, the Laredo manager, was forced to throw six different pitchers in the game after Shreves lasted just 4.0 innings. The Wingnuts, specifically Testa, capitalized on the first and second pitchers out of the bullpen to pad the advantage. During Seth Lintz's third inning in relief of Shreves, J.T. Wise started the inning by doubling to left. With two outs Khoury drew a walk and Incaviglia made the decision to go with lefty Kristhiam Linares against the left-handed hitting Testa. The Wingnuts' leading hitter jumped on the first pitch from Linares and rocketed a ball out of the park to left to score three and give Wichita a 5-1 lead.

Neither team would score the rest of the way as Caleb Graham, Tyler Pearson, and Chad Povich combined to slow the Wingnuts and the combination of Daniel Bennett and Alex Hinshaw each worked a scoreless, hitless inning to close out Laredo (17-14). Hinshaw struck out the side in his frame and has yet to allow a run this year.

Seven members of the Wichita lineup mustered a hit, while Testa was the lone individual with multiple. The Wingnuts improved to 6-0 against Laredo this season and pushed their lead in the South Division standings to four games.

RHP Justin Klipp (4-1), the league's ERA leader, will start in Wednesday night's series-finale at 7:30 p.m. with RHP Josh Strawn (3-2) toeing the rubber for the Lemurs.
