Broncos Spoil Wheat King Home Opener

Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Swift Current Broncos rode a veteran goalkeeper to a season opening win over the defending Western Hockey League Regular Season Champion Brandon Wheat Kings Friday night.
20-year old Landon Bow turned aside 54 shots, then for good measure turned away three more in the Shootout as the Broncos edged Brandon 2-1 before over five thousand disappointed fans at Westman Communications Group Place.
The loss was Brandon's first on home ice since 2011 and marked only the second time in the past sixteen years that the Wheat Kings have gone down to defeat on opening night.
Following a special pre-game ceremony, the Wheat Kings came out flying - outshooting the Broncos 22-6 in the opening period - but thanks to some timely saves and missed chances by the home side, the two teams were deadlocked at one through twenty minutes
The score stayed that way through sixty minutes of regulation and five more of overtime, before Conner Chaulk opened the shootout with a great move to beat Brandon's Jordan Papriny upstairs and give Swift Current the opening game of the weekend home and home series between the two teams.
Tim McGauley and Tyler Adams - with his first ever WHL goal - scored the game's only goals in regulation time while Papirny, the league's winningest netminder in the WHL last season, finished the night with seventeen stops.
Besides Bow's heroics between the pipes, the highlight of the night might have been the pre-game ceremonies - from the player introductions to the ceremonial opening face-off when the Wheat Kings, in association with the WHL, honoured Wade Redden and Geoff McIntosh as recipients of the League's Alumni Achievement Awards in the Scholastic and Professional Hockey Categories.
While Redden, a 14-year National Hockey League veteran, was recognized as the recipient in the Professional Hockey Category, McIntosh was honoured for his Scholastic achievements. A former Brandon goalkeeper, McIntosh currently owns Princess Dental in Brandon.
In addition, the club unveiled its three 2014-15 Championship banners - Eastern Division, Conference and WHL Regular Season after compiling an impressive 53-11-4-4 record.
Brandon's next home is Friday, October 2nd against the visiting Calgary Hitmen. The first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive a 2015-16 Fridge Magnet Schedule, courtesy of Manitoba Hydro.
