Laredo Broncos News Release
Laredo, TX-the Laredo Broncos used a 4 run 7th inning to beat the Amarillo Dillas by a score of 5-3 at Veterans Field.
The Dillas got on the scoreboard first in the top of the 3rd inning. Justin Wenger led off with a double and went to 3rd on a fly out. Keanon Simon hit a little dribbler that was bobbled by 2nd baseman Rafael Ozuna allowing Wenger to score and Simon to be safe at 1st. Then with 2 outs, Carlos Figueroa singled to deep right center field with Simon trying to score from 1st. The throw beat Simon to the plate, but Broncos' catcher Kylee Hash could not hang on to it, which allowed Simon to score. After Terrance McClain walked, Trent Lockwood delivered a double scoring Figueroa. That gave Amarillo the early 3-0 lead.
The Broncos finally got on the board in their half of the 4th inning. With 1 out, Miguel Ortiz doubled. OJ Garza then singled into right field moving Ortiz to 3rd. On the relay throw, the 2nd baseman from Amarillo Carlos Figueroa let the ball get by him, which allowed Ortiz to score and Garza to advance to 2nd. That made the score 3-1 after 4 innings.
Laredo's offense finally broke through in the bottom of the 7th, against Dillas relievers Jesse Rodriguez and Matt Smith. Luis Ugueto led off with a single. Jaime Morales hit a double play ball right to the Dillas' shortstop Willie James, but he mishandled the ball allowing everyone to be safe. Mario Mendez then stepped out and delivered a 2 run triple scoring both Ugueto and Morales. Matt Smith came into the game in relief of Rodriguez, and was greeted rudely by Andres "El Monkey" Santos. Santo hit a rbi double that scored Mendez. With 2 outs, Smith threw a wild pitch that moved Santos to 3rd. Rafael Ozuna then came up and smacked a rbi double scoring Santos. That gave the Broncos the lead by a score of 5-3.
That late rally made Broncos starter Ryan Harris in line for the win after his 7 strong innings of work. He gave up 3 runs only 1 earned on 6 hits. He walked only 1 batter and struck out 5. Edgar Soto came into the game in the top of the 8th.
The Broncos bullpen of Soto and Julio Pinto would shut down the Dillas in the 8th and 9th, with Pinto picking up the save, as the Broncos beat the Dillas by a score of 5-3.
The Broncos scored 5 runs on 11 hits and had 1 error while the Dillas scored 3 runs on 6 hits and had 3 errors.
The Broncos are now 4-12 on the season while the Dillas are 10-6. The Broncos will next be in action Sunday June 28th at Veterans Field as they play the first game of a 4 game series against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings at 7:05.
