Laredo Broncos News Release

LAREDO, TX-The Laredo Broncos and Amarillo Dillas battled each other in the finale of a 3 game set, that saw the Dillas walk away with a 3-1 victory at Veterans Field in front of a crowd of 968. The Broncos move on to their 2nd series of the season opening 6 game home stand with the first game of 3 game set against the Harlingen White Wings on Friday night. For more info call (956)-722-BASE (2273).

The starting pitchers really shined at the outset of the ball game. The Broncos starter Gregorio Martinez was on fire in the first 5 innings. After 2 Dillas reached base with one away Martinez retired 16 straight hitters while striking out 6 in that span. Amarillo's starter Ron Lowe was just as effective as he only gave up 1 hit through the first 5 innings and striking out 4.

Martinez ran into trouble in the 6th inning after getting the first two men out in the inning. The Dillas hit 3 straight singles and the third one by 2nd baseman Danny Bravo knocked in a run to give Amarillo the 1-0 lead after 6 innings.

Lowe was pitching well till he got into the 7th inning. Matt Lawman led off with a single for the Broncos followed by another single by Santiago Guerrero. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Lawman scored on a ground out by Jose Salas tying the game at 1 after 7 innings.

The game became of the battle of the bullpens starting in the 8th inning. Laredo's Rusty Jones and Amarillo's David Koons had no trouble in their first inning of work.

The 9th inning turned out to be the problem for Jones as he gave up a lead off double to the Dillas AJ Johnson. However things looked promising after Broncos catcher Luany Sanchez made a nice play on a sacrifice bunt attempt to nail Johnson at 3rd base for an out. After a strikeout Amarillo got a single and then Josh Ashton came up and nailed a pitch into centerfield that took a weird hop that got over the Broncos Edgard Clemente's head scoring both runs and giving the Dillas a 3-1 lead.

The Broncos could not muster any offense against Amarillo's closer Drew Jackson in the bottom half of the 9th as Laredo lost the rubber game of the 3 games set 3-1.

Laredo looks to rebound tomorrow night at 7:30 as they open up their next 3 game set against the Harlingen White Wings at Veteran's Field. First 200 fans to the ball park will receive Bam Bams brought to you by El Metro.
