February 6, 2007 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Portland Lumberjax News Release
PORTLAND, Feb. 6, 2007 - The annual Oregon Sports Awards have a LumberJax flair this year: Portland defenseman Brodie Merrill has been nominated for the Harry Glickman Male Professional Athlete of the Year award. The 60-minute award ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Tiger Woods Center on the Nike World Campus in Beaverton, Ore. on Sunday, February 11 at 7 p.m. Oregon's largest sport-based award ceremony is put together in part by Nike, the Portland Tribune, Les Schwab Tire Centers and Jeld-Wen.
"I am very honored and humbled to be nominated for such a prestigious award," Merrill said. "The significance of these awards is exemplified through the quality of the other four finalists. Lacrosse is a relatively small sport and to be recognized away from the game in a new market is extremely exciting. I feel fortunate to be part of a professional sports team in Portland and will continue to try to represent the city and the state of Oregon in a positive manner."
Other finalists for the Harry Glickman include St. Louis Rams' Steven Jackson, Chad Johnson of the Cincinnati Bengals, U.S. National Team soccer legend Kasey Keller and the Portland Trial Blazers' Zach Randolph. A statewide panel selected 70-plus finalists for the 13 different awards that will be presented on Sunday evening.
The tradition of the Hayward Award originated in 1948, and the Oregon Sports Awards have recognized the finest athletes and coaches in high school, college, amateur and professional fields yearly since the first accolade was given. Other awards to be given include the Lou Burge Special Olympics Athlete of the Year award, the Les Schwab Friend of Sports Award and two Merit Awards.
Former Oregon Duck and NFL football star, Ahmad Rashad will host the 60-minute award show. The master of ceremonies was an Emmy-award wining sportscaster and is currently the host and executive producer of "NBA Access with Ahmad Rashad." The awards will be televised live on CNW-14 and simulcast on 1080 The FAN with pre-event coverage beginning at 5:30 p.m. PST.
Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased for $50 by calling 503.721.7477, ext. 12.
