Spy Girl captain named NLL Girl of the Week
February 6, 2007 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
San Jose Stealth News Release
(San Jose, CA, February 6, 2007) --- Sarah, the Captain of the San Jose Stealth Spy Girls dance team, has been named NLL Girl of the Week.
Sarah is a graduate of San Jose State University, where she obtained a double BA in Dance and English. When she's not dancing, Sarah works as both a substitute teacher and an activities coordinator at a swim & racquet club. She also volunteers once a week every summer as a lifeguard for an abused and neglected children's camp.
"I realized that there was nothing I enjoyed more than taking class, choreographing, teaching, and performing," said Sarah. "Growing up, dance was the only way I was able to completely express myself without reservation."
Although she will pursue teaching, her first love and passion is dance and hopes to eventually open her own studio.
"A lot of schools today are focusing so much on academics, that the creative abilities of students are often lost in a sea of standardized testing. I would like to open my own studio because I think it's just as important to develop a child's creative outlet, especially in a society that doesn't always see the value of art. Plus dancing is extremely conducive to teaching discipline and gaining self-confidence for people of all ages."
Sarah will return to SJSU in Spring 2007 to obtain a single-subject credential so she can achieve her goal of teaching junior high school.
Sarah grew up in South San Jose and would always come to HP Pavilion for Sharks games, special events, and concerts, so she is very excited to be in the bowl performing.
"I'd always come to the arena as a spectator, so it's kind of weird to be part of an event that other spectator's are coming to watch. Since I've started dancing with the Spy Girls, I've become a big fan of lacrosse. It's such a high-paced sport to watch. And the fans are all hard core, down-to-earth people. Performing at the games doesn't feel like I'm going to work because I have such a blast watching the game, dancing, and doing promotional activities."
