Worcester Bravehearts News Release

Brockton, MA - The Brockton Rox bats were too much for the Worcester Bravehearts, who fell 8-4 on Opening Day Thursday night at Campanelli Stadium.

The Bravehearts fall to 0-1 on the young season while the Rox move to 1-0.

Brockton did not trail the entire game. The Rox took an early lead in the bottom of the first when Manny Ramirez Jr. (Tallahassee Community College) scored Jaden Sheffield (Georgetown) on an RBI double. Eric Volpi (St. Thomas Aquinas) tacked on two more runs with a single that scored Sheffield and D'Angelo Ortiz (Miami Dade College) to give the Rox a 3-0 lead.

The Rox scored a run apiece in both the second and third innings to take a 5-0 lead.

The Bravehearts got on the board in the top of the fourth with a two-out rally. After TJ Wachter (Fordham) walked, Lewis Barnum (Bryant) doubled. Matt Livingston (Siena) drove both runners in with a single to cut the deficit to 5-2.

After Volpi gave Brockton a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double, Worcester answered in the top of the sixth. Wachter scored on a passed ball, followed up by a Connor Peek (Holy Cross) single that drove Livingston in, bringing the Bravehearts within two runs.

That would be as close as Worcester would come, however. A solo home run by Chris Markovich (Boston College) in the bottom of the sixth made it 7-4, and Ortiz scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to give Brockton an 8-4 lead.

Brockton starter John Archer (St. Thomas Aquinas) went 3.2 innings, giving up two earned runs on two hits and two walks, striking out two. 'Hearts starter Ben Smith (Worcester State) gave up five runs, four earned, on five hits and four walks while striking out two, taking the loss.

The win went to Rox reliever Anthony Nofi (Flagler). He gave up two runs on two hits and two walks across two innings with three strikeouts.

The Bravehearts are at Fitton Field tomorrow for their 2022 home opener against the Nashua Silver Knights. First pitch is set for 6:30.
