Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, Conn. - July 20, 2011) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (3-3, 35-34) held on to defeat the Camden Riversharks (3-3, 26-43) by a score of 10-7 at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Wednesday.
Pat Ryan (4-5) pitched six innings and allowed four runs in the victory for Bridgeport. Four relievers combined to finish the final three frames. Wardell Starling earned his first save with Bridgeport by retiring the final two batters of the contest. Federico Baez (5-3) surrendered eight runs in four frames to suffer the loss.
Bridgeport stormed out to the lead in the first inning by scoring three times. Adam Greenberg led off with a single and stole second. After a base hit to left by Angel Berroa pushed Greenberg to third, Steve Moss walked to load the bases. Wes Bankston followed with a single to right to drive in the first Bridgeport run. After a batter had been retired, Andres Perez reached on a fielder's choice to allow one run to score; Roberson drove in Moss, with two outs, with a single to center.
After Camden scored once in the second, Bridgeport put up three in the third and two more in the fourth:
With one out in the third, Danny Putnam was hit-by-a-pitch. Perez followed by sending a two-run shot to center. His fifth homer of the season gave the Bluefish a four-run cushion. After a second batter had been retired, Luis Rodriguez walked and Angel Chavez singled to set up runners at first and second. Greenberg doubled to rightcenter to push Rodriguez to the plate.
In the fifth, Bankston sent a solo shot to leftcenter with one out. His Atlantic League leading 15th shot of the season increased the lead to 7-1. Consecutive singles by Putnam and Perez established runners at the corners. Roberson reached on an error by Baez as the starter threw the ball into center. The miscue allowed Perez to go home.
The Riversharks followed by scoring three runs in the next two innings; but Bridgeport's offense answered back in the seventh in pushing two across. Camden scored the final three runs of the game, in the eighth and ninth, but were unable to complete the comeback.
Perez earned three hits and drove in three for the winning side while Bankston had the same number of hits on Wednesday. Greenberg picked up three hits which included two doubles. The outfielder brought home two runners.
