Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Bridgeport, Conn. - August 23, 2010) - The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Newark Bears in the series opener 2-1 Monday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

The first run of the game came in the third inning to give Newark a 1-0 lead over the Bluefish. An error committed by Bridgeport's second baseman, Joe Jiannetti allowed Newark's James Cooper to reach first, and a sacrifice hit allowed Cooper to move to second. Kennard Jones drilled a double down the left field line for an RBI as Cooper crossed the plate.

Bridgeport picked up its first hit of the game and worked to even the score in the fourth frame. Tike Redman walked to begin the inning, and Hiram Bocachica broke the no-hitter with a base hit to left center. The bases were loaded when Steve Moss walked, and Josh Phelps followed a sacrifice fly to deep center field, allowing Redman to tag up from third and tie the game 1-1.

The game carried on into extra innings with the score even at one, and the Bluefish rallied in the tenth to win the game 2-1. Redman doubled to the wall in right field to start the inning, and Bocachica bunted Redman over to third. The Bears intentionally walked Steve Moss to put runners on the corners for Phelps, who pushed a single through the left side to bring in Redman, the game winning run.

Shane Youman started on the mound for Newark, allowing one run on four hits, with four walks and six strikeouts over seven innings of work. The loss was given to Greg Reinhard (3-5), surrendering one run on two hits with one walk in the tenth frame.
