Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Waldorf, MD) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (3-4) split a single admission doubleheader against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at Regency Furniture Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, winning the opener 7-4 and falling in the finale 5-1. The Bluefish conclude their season opening seven game, two city road trip 3-4 and now head back to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard for their home opener where they will face the New Britain Bees on Thursday night.
In the opener, Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Jimmy Patterson did not factor in the game's final outcome, lasting three innings allowing two runs on three hits while striking out three. Reliever Taylor Thompson (1-0) earned the victory out of the bullpen in game one with a scoreless inning, while Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Daryl Thompson (0-2) suffered the loss, lasting just two and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs (five earned runs) on seven hits, walking one, striking out one and giving up a pair of home runs. David Carpenter tossed a scoreless seventh inning en route to his first save of the season.
Jose Cuevas drove home Luis Hernandez in the opening inning to give the 'Fish a 1-0 lead, but he was only beginning there. The Bridgeport cleanup hitter launched a massive three run home run that went over the mini monster in left field to make it 5-2 in favor of the visitors in the third. Cuevas no has driven home seven runs on the season and it was his first roundtripper in a Bluefish uniform. Two batter later Wilkin Ramirez launched a solo blast to left center, his second extra base hit in as many at bats as he "touched 'em all" for the first time in 2016, giving Bridgeport a 6-2 lead as they came away with their third consecutive victory. Luis Hernandez, Cuevas, Ramirez, and Rafael Perez led the offensive attack with a pair of hits each.
In game two, Bridgeport Starting Pitcher R.J. Hively (0-1) registered a complete game loss, firing six innings allowing five runs on seven hits, walking one, striking out four, and surrendering two home runs and a wild pitch. Navery Moore (1-0) was victorious in relief for the home team after not allowing a run or a hit in an inning and a third. Bridgeport took the early 1-0 lead off Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Brian Burres just five batters into the game on a run scoring single by Luis Rodriguez, plating Ruben Sosa Jr. with the game's first run. Burres received a no-decision after giving up a run on three hits while striking out six and walking a batter in four innings on the mound. Southern Maryland took the lead for good in the bottom half of the second inning on back to back solo home runs by Fred Lewis and Michael Snyder, giving the Blue Crabs a 2-1 cushion. Snyder finished the three game series with six hits in ten at bats, including a double, three home runs, and six runs batted in. Southern Maryland added three insurance runs off Hively in the hone half of the sixth and that was more than enough as they were able to salvage the finale of the three game series. Sosa Jr. had two more hits for the 'Fish, extending his on-base streak to seven consecutive games.
Bridgeport returns home for the first time in the 2016 regular season following their seven game road trip on Thursday, April 28th when they host the newest member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and in-state rival the New Britain Bees at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. First pitch on Opening Night is scheduled for 7:12.
