Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa- A little St. Patrick's Day luck might be just what the Dubuque Fighting Saints needed to break a recent skid. Peter Quenenville jumped on a loose puck that Cedar Rapids goalie Michael Rotolo couldn't find, and broke a scoreless deadlock with 3:56 to play to push Dubuque to a 1-0 win in front of 3,231 at the Mystique Community Ice Center Saturday night. Dubuque goaltender Arthur Brey stopped 23 shots to earn his third shutout and help Dubuque break a four-game losing streak.
On Irish Night, presented by O'Toole Office Supply, both teams were looking for a lucky bounce in a game that was a goaltender's duel. Rotolo and Brey turned aside shot after shot all evening, with Dubuque outshooting Cedar Rapids 30-23 on the night. It was the final shot for Dubuque that finally sent the sold out crowd into a frenzy as Quenneville tallied his 28th goal of the season.
With Dubuque mounting pressure, Frankie DiChiara worked the puck on the far sideboards for the Fighting Saints. He dished the puck to forward John Stevens behind the net. Stevens looked in front and fed Quenneville. Rotolo stopped the sniper's shot, but the rebound sat in the blue paint. Rotolo could not find the loose puck, and Quenneville scooped in the rebound to make it 1-0 Dubuque at 16:04.
Cedar Rapids pulled Rotolo for the extra attacker, and won a faceoff with only seconds to play, but fired a shot just wide of the goal.
Throughout the game, both teams traded numerous chances with Dubuque earning two breakaways. Rotolo forced Dubuque captain Shane Sooth to fire a shot just wide in the second period, and forward Dylan Gambrell had the puck knocked off his stick late in period two as he streaked in alone. Earlier in the game, Rotolo denied Quenneville of a point-blank one-timer and Brey made a great sliding save as Cedar Rapids attempted to jam the puck five-hole.
With the victory, Dubuque improved to 7-0-0 versus Cedar Rapids this season. The RoughRiders have not won in Dubuque since February 20, 2011 and have lost nine straight games against the Fighting Saints at the Mystique Community Ice Center. The RoughRiders also suffered its second straight 1-0 loss. They fell by the same score last night in Indiana.
The Fighting Saints broke a four-game losing streak with the victory and beat Cedar Rapids for the third time in the past 12 games. In that stretch, Dubuque is 4-4-4, with the only other win coming over Des Moines. With the victory, Dubuque is now tied at the top of the Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup standings with Waterloo at 18 points.
Brey's shutout moved his record to 19-5-3 on the season. Rotolo took the loss in goal despite making 29 saves. Dubuque went 0-for-3 on the powerplay, while Cedar Rapids was 0-for-2.
