Brevard Falls 3-1 in Series Finale at Dunedin

DUNEDIN, Fla. - Yet another battle of quality starting pitchers took place on Sunday afternoon at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium, but unfortunately the Brevard County Manatees were on the short end of the battle as they fell 3-1 to the Dunedin Blue Jays.

Dunedin starting pitcher Scott Copeland turned out eight innings of three-hit ball, notching seven strikeouts with only one walk for the win. His streak of 21 consecutive batters retired, including 13 from his last start, came to an end when Chadwin Stang singled with two outs in the third inning.

One of the three hits that he allowed was a T.J. Mittelstaedt home run to lead off the sixth inning and give the Manatees (22-20) a 1-0 lead. The homer accounted for the only run Brevard County would score against either Copeland or John Anderson, who came on for a perfect ninth inning and earned a save in his first outing of the year.

Dunedin (24-16) answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to ensure themselves a three-game cushion over the Manatees in the FSL North standings.

Brevard County starting pitcher Drew Gagnon (3-4, 5.40) had faced just three batters over the minimum through the first five innings, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth.

He opened the inning by hitting Jon Berti with a curveball, then allowed a single and a walk to load the bases. Jon Talley's sacrifice fly enabled Berti to score and tie the contest. A Marcus Knecht single gave Dunedin a 2-1 lead and spelled the end of Gagnon's start, after he allowed four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings.

Gagnon was charged with his third and final run when a ground ball gave Andy Burns enough time to get home from third base. Matt Miller, the first reliever out of the bullpen, finished the sixth with the groundout and a strikeout and then only allowed a walk in the seventh.

After recently being activated from the disabled list, Tyler Cravy also took the mound for the first time since April 27 and pitched a perfect eighth with one strikeout.

The Manatees will return home to Space Coast Stadium to open a seven-game home stand on Monday at 6:35 p.m., with the first of four games against the Palm Beach Cardinals (17-25).

Brevard's David Goforth (3-4, 3.05) will take the mound looking for third straight win. He has allowed just one earned run in his last two starts, over a span of 14 innings of work.

Travis Miller (0-6, 4.71) will take the hill for Palm Beach as he will be looking for his first win of the year. Miller has not thrown more than five innings in any of his seven starts this season and has a 6.39 ERA in three May starts.
