March 2, 2004 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
St. Louis Steamers News Release
(St. Louis, March 2, 2004) -- The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced today that St. Louis Steamers veteran goalkeeper Brett Phillips has been named Goalkeeper of the Month for February. The MISL also named Greg Howes of Milwaukee Offensive Player of the Month, and Pat Morris of Philadelphia Defensive Player of the Month.
Phillips went 4-1 with a 3.30 goals-against average and .814 save percentage (70 saves on 86 shots) for St. Louis in February, helping the Steamers to within one-half game of second place Kansas City in the MISL Central Division as March begins. The 36-year-old keeper's only loss of the month came against Monterrey on Feb. 12 (a 6-3 defeat); in his other four February starts, he was 4-0 with a 2.81 goals against average and .855 save percentage.
Phillips was named MISL Goalkeeper of the Week on Feb. 23 after a seven-day span during which he won three games, allowed a total of nine goals, and saved 50 of 59 shots (.847 save percentage). The native of Tampa, Fla., is now sixth in the League with a 5.24 goals against average, ranks fourth with 304 saves, and sits fifth in both minutes played (1,235) and save percentage (.738).
Phillips' honor reinforces the Steamers' most productive stretch of the season. Prior to the All-Star Game, St. Louis won three games in a row â and four of five â to climb to 10-15 on the season and into the thick of the MISL playoff race.
On Feb. 23, Steve Butcher was named MISL Offensive Player of the Week after scoring seven goals in his past three games and raising his season goal total to a career-high 28 â third-best in the MISL. Butcher and Steamers' player-coach Daryl Doran represented St. Louis and the Steamers with pride during the 2004 MISL All-Star Weekend Feb. 27-29 in St. Louis. Each player won an event during the Feb. 28 All-Star Skills Challenge: Butcher edged Miodrag "Miki" Djerisilo of Kansas City in the finals of the "speed dribble" category, and Doran defeated Carlos "Chile" Farias in the "juggling" competition.
In the Feb. 29 All-Star Game, Doran scored two goals to help lead the MISL USA squad to a 10-1 over MISL International. Doran then was a late addition to the Steamers Legends roster in the MISL Legends Game, held immediately after the MISL All-Star Game; he scored a goal and an assist in the Steamers Legends' 9-4 loss to the MISL Legends. Butcher also scored a goal for MISL USA in the All-Star Game.
The Steamers look to improve their winning streak to four games when they host Cleveland March 6 at 1:05 p.m. at The Family Arena. The team then travels to Milwaukee to take on the MISL Central Division leading Wave on March 7 at 1 p.m. at U.S. Cellular Arena.
