San Jose CyberRays News Release
SAN JOSE, CA â The Boston Breakers took the WUSA's regular-season title and first playoff seed today with a 1-0 victory over the San Jose CyberRays.
Boston had already clinched the first playoff spot in its WUSA history, but the victory, combined with the Atlanta Beat's 1-1 tie against the New York Power, gave Boston a league-best 37 points for the season.
That set the WUSA's semifinal pairings for next week, with the fourth-place Washington Freedom traveling to Boston and the third-place San Diego Spirit heading to No.2 Atlanta to face the Beat.
Boston's Kristine Lilly got the only goal of the match in the 74th minute when she put a penalty kick into the upper right corner just beyond the fingertips of CyberRays goalkeeper Dawn Greathouse. The PK was awarded after CyberRays defender Thori Bryan took down Boston's Dagny Mellgren in the penalty box.
The CyberRays, who finished fifth, one spot out of the playoffs at 7-10-4 and 25 points, marked the retirement of two players following the game, defender Kelly Lindsey and midfielder Tisha Venturini-Hoch. Venturini-Hoch, the first player to win championships in the WUSA, World Cup, Olympics and NCAA and a WUSA Founding Player, saw her No.15 CyberRays jersey retired.
Boston defender Kate Sobrero, a teammate of Lindsey's at Notre Dame, and Lilly, a teammate of Venturini-Hoch's at North Carolina, spoke for them in the ceremonies.
Venturini-Hoch slid a ball all the way across the goalmouth in the 14th minute that just missed going in and had a header saved in the 18th.
Boston forward Dagny Mellgren scored a goal in the 61st minute that was nullified by an offside call.
