Boston Breakers News Release
Allston, MA (May 27, 2011) - The Boston Breakers not only look to snap a three-game winless streak, but they will attempt to win their first-ever game in New Jersey when they take on Sky Blue FC Saturday night. This is the second meeting of the season between the Breakers and Sky Blue FC and first game for at Yurcak Field for Boston in 2011. On May 1st at home, Boston got a goal from Rachel Buehler in the 53rd minute off a set piece taken by Kelly Smith to seal the 1-0 victory at Harvard Stadium.
The Breakers have come away with a result in the four previous meetings against Sky Blue, posting two wins and two ties. Sky Blue still leads the overall series, 4-2-3. Boston has never won at Yurcak Field, however. In the four matches the Breakers have played at Yurcak since the league's inception in 2009, they are 0-2-2.The last time Boston scored a goal at Yurcak Field was on May 31, 2009, when Smith hit the back of the net in the 12th minute in Boston's 2-1 loss. That is Boston's lone goal in New Jersey.
Sky Blue FC is coming off a 3-0 win over the Atlanta Beat. The victory snapped Sky Blue's three-game losing streak. It was also the team's first win of 2011. Finnish international Laura Kalmari scored her team-leading second goal of the season, while U.S. Women's National Team midfielder Heather O'Reilly and midfielder Allie Long netted their first goals of the season. Keeper Jenni Branam earned the shutout, making three saves. Sky Blue is fighting for three points, and a win over Boston would put the team in a tie for fourth place with the Breakers.
"Sky Blue is a good team that has improved themselves by picking up the Spanish player Adriana Martin," Boston Head Coach Tony DiCicco said. "It is one game at a time and I have a lot of confidence in the younger group that is developing. They will be ready. Having said that, we do need to have a very good effort this weekend."
If the Breakers can come away with three points Saturday, they can jump all the way from fourth to second place in the WPS table. Although, they will need some help to move into second place. Atlanta will have to beat or tie magicJack Saturday night in Florida, and Western New York will have to do the same against Philadelphia on Sunday. Currently, magicJack and Philadelphia are tied for second with eight points. Boston is 2-4-1 with seven points.
