Breakers Lose to Lightning at FC Kansas City
August 7, 2014 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)
Boston Breakers News Release
The Boston Breakers fell to FC Kansas City 2-1 on the road Wednesday night as weather conditions cut the game short after just one half of play. Stats stood as final after the early cancellation marked the match's completion, earning Kansas City the 2-1 win. Kansas City had previously clinched a playoff berth in last week's play, but Wednesday night's victory clinched the Blues second place in the NWSL, and guaranteed the squad home field advantage in the semi-finals of the 2014 NWSL Playoffs.
The loss keeps Boston ranked last place in the league with just three games left to play in the 2014 campaign. Boston came back from an early 1-0 deficit Wednesday evening, but couldn't maintain the lead heading into halftime.
After a two hour delay due to severe weather conditions at Kansas City's Verizon Wireless Field, the Blues took an early lead as Amy Rodriguez went in alone and beat Breakers keeper Alyssa Naeher for the go ahead goal.
Boston answered minutes later when officials called a foul on Kansas City inside their own penalty box, and Heather O'Reilly finished the PK for the game's tying goal.
Shortly after, Kansas City responded with a goal from Sarah Hagen, her fourth on the season, to regain the advantage and lead the game 2-1.
Boston bid with a few strong attacks throughout the remainder of the first half but couldn't find the back of the net. Kansas City remained in the lead going into the half, and after weather conditions resulted in two additional delays in the start of the second, the game was finally called and the first half statistics stood as final call.
Boston will return home this Sunday, August 10th for their second to last home game of the year as they host the Portland Thorns at Harvard Stadium with a 6:30 p.m. ET start time. Fans can keep track of the action from Sunday's game live on YouTube. To purchase tickets for the game, fans can visit www.breakerstickets.com or call 617-945-1704.
