Boston Breakers News Release
After tallying their first home win of the season last Sunday in a thrilling game against Atlanta, the Boston Breakers look to repeat the victory this Sunday, July 18 at Harvard Stadium against the Washington Freedom at 5 p.m.
Coming into the second half down 1-0, Jordan Angeli came off the bench on Sunday and sent a powerful volley to the back of the net in the 49th minute for the equalizer. Then, in the 52nd minute Kelly Smith scored off a rebound from the goalkeeper for the lead, just a minute before Liz Bogus scored her first ever WPS goal for Boston's third goal in five minutes-a league record.
Boston heads into their third match-up against Washington this season riding their biggest wave of momentum yet, following two back to back victories. While Washington is tied for 4th place sitting four points ahead of 6th place Boston, the Breakers are leading the season series between the two teams 1-0-1. Coming off a close 3-2 loss to first place FC Gold Pride, Washington hasn't won a game since May 30 against Philadelphia.
Sunday's game is brought to you by CitiBank. A "Kick Like a Girl" DVD and poster will be given to the first 1,000 fans. In addition, the first 500 fans into the stadium will receive a free Alex Scott trading card presented by Stonyfield Farms.
Tickets are available online and at the Harvard Box office on Sunday. Fans who can't make it to the game can watch the action live on Fox Soccer Channel.
After tallying their first home win of the season last Sunday in a thrilling game against the Atlanta Beat, the Boston Breakers look for their third consecutive victory this Sunday, July 18 at Harvard Stadium against the Washington Freedom at 5 p.m.
On Sunday, the Breakers took advantage of a record-setting second half rally to comeback from a 1-0 deficit against the Beat. Second half substitution Jordan Angeli scored the equalizer in the 49th minute on a powerful volley from distance. Kelly Smith put the Breakers ahead to stay with an opportunistic goal off a rebound in the 52nd minute. Just one minute later, forward Liz Bogus scored her first goal in a Boston Breakers uniform to give Boston a 3-1 lead. All three goals were scored in a span of five minutes - a WPS record.
This Sunday's match finds two teams seemingly headed in different directions. While the Breakers are winners of two straight, the Washington Freedom struggled through winless months in June and, so far, in July as well. The Freedom are 0-2-4 since their last victory on May 30th. The Freedom will also be without the services of Head Coach Jim Gabarra on Sunday, who is suspended for one game after drawing a red card in the Freedom's previous match, a 3-2 loss to FC Gold Pride on July 11th.
