Minnesota United FC News Release
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Friday, January 29, 2016) -- Brazilian midfielder Ibson will once again represent Minnesota United, following the signing of a new contract with the team. Per team and league policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"I think Ibson is a world class talent," said United Head Coach Carl Craig. "Having had a year under his belt, and I'm sure he's spent the whole offseason practicing his English, so he and I can share a few words and some expletives, but we are excited to have him back with the club. Depending on when MLS comes, he certainly has the ability to go in and make a name-he's already got a name throughout the world, maybe not as well known in the U.S. as he certainly is in Brazil-but the talent that lad has is outstanding."
Bringing versatility and experience to the midfield, the 32-year-old was a big part of the starting XI last season. In his 26 appearances, Ibson scored six goals for the Loons and assisted his teammates four times, leading United's midfield in points. He made the team of the week twice in 2015 and was honored in the Best XI with three other United players.
"I think there is nothing but great times ahead for him. He's a talisman and can be finding his way in the game in this country wasn't as easy for him as he thought it would be," said Craig. "But I know that after that one year he'll make those necessary adjustments because he has the ability too. What I'm looking forward to is him being able to benefit from that year of experience with us and as a fan I'd be excited to see what he can bring this year."
Prior to joining the Loons in 2015, he played across Europe and Brazil with several clubs. After beginning his career with Flamengo, Ibson went to Europe to play for legendary clubs FC Porto and Spartak Moscow. Ibson helped both clubs in domestic and UEFA Champions League campaigns, scoring in the Champions League group stage for Spartak.
Ibson returned to Brazil in 2011, going on to represent top clubs like Santos, Corinthians, and Flamengo once again. He returned to Europe to play with Italy's Bologna for a year before joining Minnesota.
Ibson and the rest of United begin the 2016 season on April 2nd, on the road against the Carolina RailHawks. The team will return to NSC Stadium in Blaine on April 16th for the home opener against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.
