Brazilian Striker to Boost Offense
September 10, 2002 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Harrisburg Heat News Release
Harrisburg, PA - The Harrisburg Heat today announced that it has acquired forward Renato Pereira from the San Diego Sockers in exchange for the rights to Nate Hetherington, a midfielder on Harrisburg's designation list who most recently played for the A-League's Atlanta Silverbacks.
Pereira, 25, began his indoor career in 2000 with the Monterrey La Raza (coached by new Heat skipper Erich Geyer) and scored 25 goals and 36 points as Monterrey took the WISL title. The native of Sao Paulo, Brazil joined the Sockers for the 2001 season and notched 16 goals and 23 points. The deft striker first appeared on the indoor soccer radar screen when he played for Brazil during the 1999 Indoor Soccer World Cup in Mexico.
Today's trade is the Heat's third in the last week as Geyer restructures the club for the 2002-03 season. Last Wednesday, Harrisburg sent Nick Corneli to Kansas City for Ato Leone, and yesterday the Heat announced that it has dealt Paolo Ceccarelli to the Comets for future considerations and sent Daniel Barber and the rights to Justin Labrum to the Dallas Sidekicks for Marco Coria, Genoni Martinez, and Raul Salas.
Harrisburg has also signed seven players to offer sheets since Friday: holdovers Chris Morman and Matt Tanzini and newcomers Salas, Jake Atkin, David Barbosa, Martin Hernandez, and Francisco Rodriguez.
The Heat will practice tomorrow at Sports City on Linglestown Road from approximately 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and take the afternoon off. Geyer's physically intense training regimen will resume Thursday with morning (8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) and afternoon (3:00 - 5:00 p.m.) sessions. The team will work out Friday morning from 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. at Milton Hershey School and train at Sports City in the afternoon from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Because the Heat's training sessions are currently somewhat variable in start and end times, it is suggested that media arrive a half hour ahead of the scheduled practice end time or contact Heat Director of Public and Media Relations Phil Yerger at the office (717-233-8172) or on his cell phone (717-497-5315) to make prior arrangements. Players and staff are also likely to be available immediately prior to the afternoon sessions at Sports City.
